Something that will help an artist create his best paintings
| Actually, I've never had such a desire before. I didn't want to analyze everything. And I think we young people were having a great time back then. Maybe we made the biggest mistakes then, but it was much easier for us to live and work. ...There were failures in the director's creative biography. Interest in a person, in his personal fate, combined with an attempt at false symbolic interpretations of simple human destinies, led to failures, the meaning of which was later revealed to Chkheidze himself. However, everything is connected in creativity: mistakes and victories. And maybe sometimes it's failures that open your eyes more acutely to what will later help the artist create his best paintings. In 1956, the film "Lurja Magdana" by two young and still unknown directors T. Abuladze and R. Chkheidze was released. The film turned out to be somewhat unexpected in the stream of films released at that time. However, this surprise itself was natural. There was nothing in the story of the same name by E. Gabashvilp that could entice the authors of staged films, who were accustomed in those years to turn to historical material primarily in search of spectacular extras and festive costumes. There were no spectacular situations or strong passions in the film of the young directors. The story was mundane, simple, even mundane. The story was like this... ...Poor widow Magdana has two children. Every day she carries matsoni to the city, earning pennies for food. And nothing disturbed the usual routine of her life, until one day, the guys found a dying donkey on the road, abandoned by a coal merchant. This event brought a new meaning not only to the children's lives, but also gave rise to new hopes among adults: Lurja will get stronger and, probably, will be able to help them work — to take them to the city of Matsoni. But in the city, a rich coal miner identified his donkey and took it away from Magdana through the court. That's all. What attracted the filmmakers to this story? Why, it would seem, only a touching story that was not at all connected with the events of our time turned out to be so necessary for our audience — and this was the most interesting and unexpected thing? Strange as it may seem, there is already an answer in these questions themselves. The debutants made an attempt to show something very simple and vital on the screen. Magdana is trying to help her fellow villagers, because this is the most natural thing for her to do.: how is it possible, having a donkey, not to load a neighbor's matzoni on it! But this does not make Magdana any special, a heroine, just as the villagers who came to the court to stand up for her rights do not become heroes either. With the advent of "Lurji Magdana", there was a change of optics: the viewer got very close to the characters. The authors were concerned about kindness that does not claim to receive rewards, loyalty that does not need high words, and love that a person needs, perhaps even more than bread. It was precisely this kind of story, not affected, not pathetic, not exaggerated, that the viewer was waiting for then. And the young artists intuitively approached the issues that were already on the agenda. Their discovery began with images of children, with an insight into the world of children's joys and worries. The children became the real heroes of this tape. Their deeds, worries, and experiences carried such a charge of sincerity, sincerity, and naturalness that just watching them was already a pleasure. While working on their first film, the directors discovered that it is in the children's worldview that the norms that prevail in adult life sometimes appear in the clearest and purest form. Of course, if these adults live according to natural human morality, that is, labor, humanistic morality. This discovery was especially important for Chkheidze. In order to be able to talk about children in this way, he needed to learn to see in a new way, and he needed to find this childishly clear and unbiased view of the world himself.
