California ProKart Challenge Crowns Champions at Streets of Lancaster GP
Monday, 24 September 2012 08:05
The California ProKart Challenge completed the 2012 season with the fourth running of the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix on the September 15-16 weekend. The Southern California city and Superkarts! USA welcomed just over 120 racers from across the country in ten classes to tackle the fastest street race in North America. In addition to a stand-out event in front of hundreds of spectators lining the fences, the 0.7-mile street course situated on the ‘Boulevard’ section of the city was used as the final championship point event toward the California PKC program, the first time in series history. Each and every class featured its own bit of drama, including some of the championship chases to the final checkered flag.

The Extreme Karting S1 Pro Stock Moto category was all Fritz Leesmann as he swept the action over the two days. The SKUSA Pro Tour championship leader did not earn his accomplishments without a challenge, as California PKC championship leader Jimmy McNeil was on his bumper the entire time. The fight for the main event victory came down to the final corners as contact was made. Leesmann escaped, while McNeil was unable to continue allowing Fritz to score the victory. 2011 event winner Daniel Langon moved up to second, with Nicky Freytag in third. While the result was his worse over the six rounds, McNeil secured the series championship in his return back to the S1 ranks. Ryon Beachner ended the year second, with Freytag placing third in the standings.

Hundreds of Southern California residents took in the final day of action for the 2012 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. The City of Lancaster and Superkarts! Over 120 racers from all across the country contested seven race groups, each providing its own bit of drama and excitement to keep the fans egger for more on the fence line. The tight seven-tenth mile course gave the racers a challenging course to tackle, with the hot weather also throwing another obstacle. The first day of action for the 2012 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix went into the books Saturday afternoon. The Southern California street race held qualifying and the opening round of heat races, counting toward the final round of the Superkarts! USA California ProKart Challenge. Temperatures over 100 degrees challenged the 125 drivers and the event staff throughout the day. The fast and confined course on the ‘Boulevard’ district of the City of Lancaster provided its own challenges for the drivers. Thus far, Fritz Leesmann and Matt Johnson have tamed the beast that is the 0.7-mile street course.

For the fourth time, the City of Lancaster will open up its streets and welcome karters from all across the west coast of the United States to host the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. A 0.8-mile temporary circuit has been constructed around the ‘Boulevard’ section of the Southern California city, north of downtown Los Angeles with two full days of racing schedule for Saturday and Sunday. Working with Superkarts! USA, the event will host the final round of the California ProKart Challenge, with $65,000 in championship purse on the line, including guaranteed starting positions for the upcoming SKUSA SuperNationals XVI in November.

The partnership between the City of Lancaster and SKUSA formed last year in an effort to raise the bar of the event. The new joint venture brought on new class structure and layout for the event, which equated to the highest entry total in the three years. Building on that success, event organizers from the city and from the karting organization have worked months to ensure this year’s event will be another step in making the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix a destination for racers and fans alike.

The course will be similar to the 2011 layout, positioned right in the middle of the busy city, surrounding the course with restaurants, bars, and shops. The circuit includes four 90-degree corners and a tight hairpin, leading onto a 1000’ straightaway with top speeds reaching 90mph, making it the fastest street race in American karting. In addition to being fast, SKUSA official ensure the track is among the safest course with the proper barrier systems, haybales, and fencing.
