The first day of action for the 2012 Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix went into the books Saturday afternoon. The Southern California street race held qualifying and the opening round of heat races, counting toward the final round of the Superkarts! USA California ProKart Challenge. Temperatures over 100 degrees challenged the 125 drivers and the event staff throughout the day. The fast and confined course on the ‘Boulevard’ district of the City of Lancaster provided its own challenges for the drivers. Thus far, Fritz Leesmann and Matt Johnson have tamed the beast that is the 0.7-mile street course.

For the fourth time, the City of Lancaster will open up its streets and welcome karters from all across the west coast of the United States to host the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. A 0.8-mile temporary circuit has been constructed around the ‘Boulevard’ section of the Southern California city, north of downtown Los Angeles with two full days of racing schedule for Saturday and Sunday. Working with Superkarts! USA, the event will host the final round of the California ProKart Challenge, with $65,000 in championship purse on the line, including guaranteed starting positions for the upcoming SKUSA SuperNationals XVI in November.
The partnership between the City of Lancaster and SKUSA formed last year in an effort to raise the bar of the event. The new joint venture brought on new class structure and layout for the event, which equated to the highest entry total in the three years. Building on that success, event organizers from the city and from the karting organization have worked months to ensure this year’s event will be another step in making the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix a destination for racers and fans alike.
The course will be similar to the 2011 layout, positioned right in the middle of the busy city, surrounding the course with restaurants, bars, and shops. The circuit includes four 90-degree corners and a tight hairpin, leading onto a 1000’ straightaway with top speeds reaching 90mph, making it the fastest street race in American karting. In addition to being fast, SKUSA official ensure the track is among the safest course with the proper barrier systems, haybales, and fencing.

The City of Lancaster and Superkarts! USA will unite once again to host racers from all across the western half of the United States for the 4th annual Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. The Southern California city will open up the ‘Boulevard’ for a three day festival, featuring the final round of the California ProKart Challenge around a temporary circuit on the city streets September 14-16. Not only will the event be a prime location for preparation for the upcoming SKUSA SuperNationals XVI, the 10 categories featured on the weekend will wrap up the six-event championship chase that began back in February, with a $65,000 championship prize purse on the line.
The event will just be a formality for Jimmy McNeil who has positioned himself as the soon-to-be champion in the S1 Pro Stock Moto category, sponsored by Extreme Karting/Vemme Kart. With three victories on the year, McNeil will look to earn his fourth 2012 win in Lancaster to secure the title and prepare for the upcoming SuperNationals. Ryon Beachner sits second in the standings, while Peter Abba is third. The same can be said for Matt Johnson in the TaG Senior division, sponsored by Leading Edge Motorsports. A winner in three of the five previous events, the veteran will face another strong field in Lancaster trying to deny him from his fourth victory. 2011 class champion Travis Lowe currently sits second in the standings with Devin Lindsey in third. The title chase is not yet completed in the Phil Giebler Racing-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto category. Matias Podboj has led the standing the entire year, opening up the season with a perfect round one at Buttonwillow. Michael Leib has put on the challenge in the second half of the season, out-scoring Podboj in two of the last three events. The difference is just 178 points between the two heading into Lancaster with a number of drivers expected to take part, which could play a big factor in the final standings.
