California ProKart Challenge

PKC South Returns to Action This Weekend at Streets of Willow
Tuesday, 10 May 2011 08:34
Coming off the successful Honda Racing/HPD SpringNationals – the opening round of the 2011 Pro Tour – Superkarts! USA is back in action this weekend as the ProKart Challenge South program gets its second half of the season underway. A popular destination for the Southern California karting community, the opportunity to race on the Streets of Willow circuit – a 1.8-mile road course on the grounds of the Willow Springs International Motorsports Park – will host this fourth round of the series. With just three more races left on the season’s schedule including Streets, the championship for the 10 categories in their best 5 of 6 races is still up for grabs.

The Extreme Karting-sponsored S1 Pro Stock Moto championship chase is among the closest entering this weekend’s action, with three different winners in as many events thus far. Ryon Beachner currently holds a slim five-point advantage over Brad Dunford – with defending class champ Clinton Schoombee 20 points back. All three showed the speed in Tucson; however, none left with hardware. Each will be looking to jump back on the winning streak and gain the extra edge on the title hunt. Nicky Freytag will be riding high off the Pro Tour opener as he continues to lead the 2 Wild Karting-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto point standings heading into Streets of Willow. Freytag won the opening round feature in Arizona and came back to podium the following day to position himself to battle for the Pro Tour title. In Rosamond, Vivek Tandon and Bryan Lemon will look to close the gap on Freytag’s PKC point lead.

Travis Lowe continues to be the driver to beat in the Tony Kart West-sponsored TaG Senior category. Despite a tough Buttonwillow round and Pro Tour opening weekend, Lowe will be searching to jump back on the winning trail toward a PKC championship. Devin Lindsey is now holding the challenger role, with Billy Cleavelin sitting in the third spot after being involved in a wreck at Buttonwillow that injured his hand along with his championship hopes. Steve Wiener holds the title lead in the Leading Edge Motorsports-sponsored TaG Master class, with Kim Ryan and Allan Svela giving chase.

Looking to continue the momentum he’s carried through the first part of the season, Jimmy McNeil heads to Streets hoping to extend his point lead in the G-Phactory-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto category. Scoring the event sweep in Tucson to open the Pro Tour campaign, McNeil has four victories in five features on the year including the three PKC events. Robert Marks and Randy McKee will hope to use the draft on the large road course to gain some valuable points over McNeil. The Select Shifter/DR Kart-sponsored S3 Novice Stock Moto class will continue to be close, with two-time winner Jessica Sollberger leading the point chase over Sebastian Scaglia. Sollberger sustained an injury while competing in the S2 category at the Pro Tour opener, but with the road course style of racing it may not come into play once racing begins Saturday. Marc Lewis extended his point lead over Robert Morales in S4 Magnum after a perfect Buttonwillow event – but anything can happen when hitting the Streets of Willow complex. Howie Idelson’s lead is now just 20 markers over G1 newcomer Peter Workum after three rounds.

The championship chase is even closer in the TaG Junior division, with the top three now only separated by 14 points. Both Austin Dement and Willy Axton gained on point leader Carter Williams last month at Buttonwillow, with Williams’ lead now just nine points over Dement. Defending Pro Tour champion and Tucson double winner Colton Herta leads the PKC South championship standings for TaG Cadet, sponsored by Phil Giebler Racing – with Jacob Drew just 30 points back. Noah Grey sits third, still with a chance to battle for the title. The Rosamond round, utilizing a slightly shortened track layout compared to the other classes, also marks the second round of a special four-race mini-series for this category – the TaG Cadet Rok Cup International Final Shoot-out – with the driver scoring the most points in the program earning an invitation to compete at the October 16 event in Italy.

The ProKart Challenge discounted price structure – which lowers the package price for an entry and race tires down to just $295 if the racer registers online – is also still available. Pre-registration pricing applies if completed before the midnight deadline on Wednesday, May 11 at http://www.skusastore.com. Signup at the track will be allowed but will cost racers $85 more than the pre-race entry fee. Friday practice will be held from 9am to 5pm ($80 practice day fee) and the Willow Springs facility still charges a $10 per person gate fee when attendees arrive. The specially-branded MG ‘SKUSA’ tire – the new official tire for all Superkarts! USA events – will continue to be utilized and receive the highest remarks following the first round of the SKUSA Pro Tour. More information regarding round four of ProKart Challenge South at the Streets of Willow circuit can be found at the following link (http://www.superkartsusa.com/regional/pkc-south/round-4-2011.html).

Following the Streets of Willow event, Superkarts! USA will travel back north for round three of the ProKart Challenge North program, traveling to Reno, Nevada for the first time in series history. The May 27-28 event will be held at the Desert Park Raceway, and more information can be found at the following link (http://www.superkartsusa.com/regional/pkc-north/round-3-2011.html).
