| Johnson and Batt Split Central States Challenge Double Opener at New Castle |

 The 2010 season got underway for the Superkarts! USA Central States Challenge (SCSC) regional program. Rounds one and two were contested over the weekend at the New Castle Motorsports Park - one of the leading facilities in the United States. The weekend brought together over 100 entries total for the two days with goal of great racing and good times accomplished for the traveling series.New for 2010 was the format of the race structure to fall in line with the Superkarts! USA format while giving racers more track time in return. The Qualifying, Heat 1, Heat 2, Feature format was implemented to the delight of the racers in attendance. On track, a number of drivers used the new structure to gain maximum points toward the year-end championship, sweeping the day with a couple drivers sweeping the weekend. The most competitive class of the weekend was the new S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto. The action was close from the first official qualifying session as the top two were separated by just 94-thousandths of a second. Local driver Evan Batt edged out former series champion Derek Crockett, posting a 53.838-lap on the short 0.8-km course utilized for the weekend. Crockett grabbed the holeshot to lead the first three laps of the first heat before Batt retook the spot and earned the win. The two were joined in the second heat by Lukas Johnson - who picked up the pace with his back-up powerplant after seizing an engine during Friday practice. Batt led early before Johnson knifed his way to the point to score the win with Crockett running a close third. Both Batt and Crockett got the jump on the rookie Johnson as the flag waved to begin the 20-lap feature race. On cold MG Tires, Johnson shined as he quickly took care of both to assume the lead by the end of lap three. Crockett was able to challenge early, taking over the lead near the halfway mark however Johnson put it in high gear in the closing laps. Johnson took over the top spot and cruised to a three-second victory. Batt was unable to match the pace set by the top two, settling for the final podium spot.  The next day, Batt again set himself as the driver to beat by scoring the pole position in qualifying over Johnson and Crockett. Eric Batt, brother to Evan, joined the fight for the win in heat one to make it a four-way battle. In the end, Evan came away with the win over Johnson, Crockett and Eric. Heat two manufactured duplicate results with no exchange for position as Evan Batt continued to show the way. Batt and Johnson established themselves as the top two in the main event. Batt led the way as Johnson ran a close second. Leading all 20 laps, Batt took the victory by just two-tenths over Johnson - who was credited for the fast lap of the race. Crockett was able to outrun Eric Batt for the final podium step.The S4 Masters Stock Moto category also saw two different winners on the weekend. Defending class champion Rick Freund led things on Saturday but not before an early challenge from Pat Malacarne. In qualifying, Malacarne posted the fast lap of the session to earn the top spot over Freund. Grabbing the holeshot to begin heat one, Freund led all 10 laps for the win. Malacarne was unable to start heat two due to a mechanical issue, leaving Freund to run to another wire-to-wire heat win. In the feature, Malacarne came from the back charging but ran out of time as Freund led all 20 laps to score the victory by two-seconds. Central States Challenge newcomer Chris Dickson capped off the podium in third. Another SCSC newcomer made a statement on Sunday as Ron Petersen joined the fray to sweep the day’s action. After posting the fast lap in qualifying, Petersen led all 10 laps of the opening heat race. After troubling in the opening lap of heat two, Petersen bounced back to regain the lead from Freund and take the win. Leading from green-to-checkered, Petersen capped off the sweep with the main event victory. Freund was second until retiring with six laps to go, handing second to Kyle Donahue.  Two drivers recorded weekend sweeps, ironically, in the two largest classes. Local driver Karl Weber used the home track knowledge to his advantage to sweep the action in TaG Junior. Despite Weber scoring the victory by 13-seconds on Saturday, second place Mick Gabriel recorded the fast lap of the feature to outrun Richy Yates for the spot. On Sunday, Weber scored the victory by just six-seconds, taking home fast lap honor in the process. Gabriel was runner-up once again with Sam Cate rounding out the podium. The popular TaG Cadet division continues to be the domain of defending class champion Kyle Donahue. The biggest class of the weekend with 12 drivers doing battle both days, Donahue dominated to victories of eight-seconds on Saturday and four-seconds on Sunday. The fight throughout the weekend was for second with Max Nufer edging out Kyle Potts at the line on Saturday while Kyle Kennedy was the runner-up and Clayton Weatherman completed the podium on Sunday.TaG Senior was split on the weekend by two drivers sweeping each day. Colton Aldridge topped the charts provisionally in qualifying on Saturday until getting bounced in tech. This put British open wheel rising star James Winslow, who know resides in Indy, to the top followed by Derek Crockett. Aldridge rebounded back to score the first heat win, only to be found incompliant in tech once again, handing the win to Winslow. With Crockett retiring on lap six, the fight was left for Aldridge and Winslow. After a number of exchanges for the lead, Winslow came away with the victory by just under two-tenths while Kevin Donahue rounded out the podium. Putting the first day’s troubles behind him, Aldridge came back to sweep day two of action. Posting a blistering lap in qualifying, Aldridge was able to out run Winslow in the two heat races. Aldridge led all but the first lap of the main event en route to a five-second victory over Winslow with Donahue edging out Crockett for third. The S5 Junior Stock Moto category had a number of drivers graduate to the next level, leaving the championship up for grabs in 2010. After the double event weekend in New Castle, Colton Brooks looks to be the driver to beat. He and Angela Donahue battled for the top spot throughout the weekend with Brooks coming away with the main event victory both days. Brooks took the win Saturday by just over two-seconds and on Sunday by five-seconds with Joe Reed placing third both days. W. Daniel Monahan went unchallenged to the G1 victory on Saturday while Paddy O’Brien scored the victory on Sunday.  In local option competition, Joey Eppink swept the Yamaha Junior Sportsman class on Saturday over Tony Petersen and Kamryn Sloan. With Eppink unable to compete on Sunday, Petersen swept the day with Sloan placing second. The Kid Kart competitors for the weekend included Luke Howard, Garrett Adams, and Mason Maine with Howard winning throughout the weekend.“This weekend was a great way to start out the 2010 season,” stated SKUSA Central States Challenge Director Pam Freund. “The weather was great with no rain. The first event with new race director Stan Bryniarski went off without a hitch as the racers welcomed his professionalism.
