Central States Challenge Heads to Kansas City for Round Six |
Friday, 13 August 2010 01:00 |
![]() “We are excited to be heading to Kansas City for round six of the series,” stated Pam Freund of the SKUSA Central States Challenge. “Our racers are coming off a busy month in July with our double header at USA International Raceway and the SKUSA SummerNationals the following weekend. This time off has charged them up for the final stretch when we crown our champions next month.” Looking at the title chases, the S2 category currently has a four-driver race with rookie Lukas Johnson leading the way. A three-time winner on the season, Johnson is looking to hold off the late charges by Carly Mandarino, SKUSA SummerNationals double winner Derek Crockett, and Kyle Gnau. The Minnesota driver’s lead is at 190 points heading into Kansas City with anything possible in the final two events. Crockett also has the lead in TaG Senior with a number of local drivers expected to challenge the St. Louis driver for victory and bragging rights. Defending class champion Rick Freund has a stranglehold thus far on the S4 category scoring the feature wins four of the five races on the season. Kyle Donahue has one victory on the year and will look to add to it as the season ends while gaining ground on Freund’s championship lead. While the S5 Junior Stock Moto category flourished the past few seasons, the graduation of a number of drivers has put the driver counts much lower than in the past. The racing however has continued to remain competitive with Joe Reed now leading the title chase following his double wins at USAIR in Wisconsin. Colton Brooks will now have to end the season as he began, scoring two victories at New Castle, if he hopes to overtake the top of the standings. Indiana driver Karl Weber has been near perfect on the season, going four for four in his main events. Fellow Indy driver Mick Gabriel has been on his trail the entire season and will need some help in the final two races to close the 195 point gap. With the absence of Kyle Donahoe following the opening weekend, Austin Mayton has stepped up to the plate and is in control in the TaG Cadet standings. He holds a 174 point lead following his double sweep in Wisconsin with Ryan Joehl and Gateway winner Kyle Kennedy trailing in the rankings. Kamryn Sloan is fourth but also leads the local option Yamaha Jr. Sportsman division. The track layout for the event will be the 14-turn circuit that is sure to challenge the drivers and the equipment with its challenging outline. Pre-entries have been coming in from Kansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana, and Missouri. Competitors can still pre-register by midnight, August 18 (http://www.centralstateskarting.com/Forms/2010_Entry_Form.pdf) and those not yet entered do not have to be a Superkarts! USA member to race unless they are racing for the point championship. While the MG Yellow tires are required for those in the SKUSA categories, competitors are not required to purchase your tires from the series. The sixth round of the Central States Challenge is scheduled as one event, contested over two days of action. Beginning on August 21, a full day of practice will take place with qualifying held at the end of the day. Sunday will consist of morning warm-up followed by both rounds of heat races, leading into the main event. Camping will be available Saturday night at no charge or you may book a room at the host hotel - Hilton Garden Inn (816-350-3000) for $91 if booked by August 13.
