Racing is underway for the Superkarts! USA SuperNationals 24 at its fifth different location of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Following the qualifying sessions on Thursday, heat races began on Friday with the opening two rounds contested for both the morning and afternoon categories. The weather was perfect all day, with not much of a temperature drop when the sun set behind the Las Vegas mountains to the west. There were no major surprises in the heat races, as drivers finally tackled the temporary circuit with wheel-to-wheel racing.
KA100 Senior was all the Morgan brothers on track, taking three of the four heat races on the day. Both won the opening heat races with top qualifier Cole Morgan (RPM / Tony Kart) securing the win in AvsD by three seconds with Carson Morgan (RPM / Tony Kart) named winner in a red flag shortened BvsC. Carson was penalized three seconds for a pushback bumper penalty, giving the win to Thomas Annunziata (MDR / Kosmic). The second round was a Morgan sweep with Cole winning AvsC and Carson taking the checkered in BvsD. The two will face off in the their final heat Saturday to decide the pole position for SuperSunday. Having officially announced the formation and dates for their new Florida Winter Series back in June, Superkarts! USA is excited to confirm the venues and class structure for the two-weekend schedule. The season will begin on January 12-14 at AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex and will cap at Ocala Grand Prix on February 9-11. The series will feature four full days of racing over the two weekends, with Saturday and Sunday main events at both Homestead and Ocala. The series will feature Stock Honda and IAME categories, in addition to a local option Briggs 206 Senior class.
“It’s really exciting for all of us at Superkarts! USA to return the SKUSA name to winter competition in Florida,” admitted Tom Kutscher, Superkarts! USA CEO. “Don Janowski and Jim Murley launched the first Florida Winter Tour in 1998 before handing over the reigns over to Bill Wright, so this new expansion of our national program is taking SKUSA back to its roots. That’s exciting. We’re pleased to be able to work with the ownership groups at both Homestead and Ocala for our maiden voyage in Florida, and I’m certain that the series will become a cornerstone of our national program. I’m happy that this series will provide our East Coast customers with the opportunity to run two additional SKUSA races in 2018, ahead of the three Pro Tour events.”

Beaux Barfield brings a stellar motorsports resume to the new Race Directing team.
On the heels of the open letter from SKUSA principal Tom Kutscher, Superkarts! USA is pleased to announce yet another small piece of a complicated 2020 puzzle by announcing the next chapter in series officiating with not one, but two new race directors for the 2020 SKUSA ProTour and SKUSA SuperNationals.
Effectively immediately, SKUSA is tremendously proud to confirm they have procured none other than veteran race directors Beaux Barfield and John Maesky. Both Barfield and Maesky have stellar resumes and long histories in motorsports, in addition to their current roles at the International Motor Sports Association — where the duo has worked together as a team for the better part of a decade.
Other major sanctioning bodies, such as IndyCar, are also familiar with the idea of having 1 or more advisors working with a Race Director to evaluate on-track conduct. The concept aims to provide consistency and an alternative viewpoint to look at all incidents.
“It’s no secret,” said an open and honest Tom Kutscher “the 2020 SKUSA season is unlike anything motorsport has ever seen before. We realize with an entire national season baked into two consecutive weekends; officiating will be of utmost importance. We are pleased to deliver not only one… but two of the best in North America.”

The California ProKart Challenge resumed the 2019 season with the first ever two-race weekend in series history. Rounds Two and Three were held at the CalSpeed Karting facility on June 8-9 following the opening event of 2019 in Buttonwillow in March. Approximately 150 competitors navigated the ‘Tecnico’ layout under challenging-hot weather conditions each day, totaling over 300 entries for the weekend. A number of drivers were able to double up in the win column on the weekend in their respective categories, closing out the first half of the 2019 championship chase for the California PKC. Racers also made history by setting new track records in all California PKC classes on their Evinco Tires, as well as winning incredible podium and raffle prizes.

The class that started it all at the SKUSA SuperNationals was the S1 division. The premier shifterkart category at the inaugural SuperNats in 1997 with the S1 division. That remained the headline division up until the SuperPro division was established. It was in that category the engine program shifted from moto engines to karting-specific powerplants, while also welcoming international drivers by the final year of the class in 2009. It was then when the division was split into two with the promotion of the Stock Moto category from the SKUSA Pro Tour to the S1 name and KZ class established. 2019 was the debut of the IAME SSE engine, adjusting the name to Pro Shifter. Now, for the 2021 edition of the SuperNationals, we are combining the KZ and Pro Shifter engines into one category, welcoming the largest class turnout in recent years.
The combination of the two categories into one welcome two defending winners looking to repeat in 2021. History can be made by Billy Musgrave (Factory Karts), the three-time defending winner in the Pro Shifter division. The 2012 S2 winner has four total SuperNationals victories, currently tied with Connor De Phillippi and Kip Foster with the most by one driver. With a win on SuperSunday, Musgrave can put himself alone at the top of the SuperNationals win list. Looking to join him at four total wins in Vegas is defending KZ winner Danny Formal (LEM / Formula K). It was an emotional victory for the Costa Rican in 2019, besting a talented field for his third SuperNationals win, joining his S1 victories from 2015 and 2016. Last year, the two did not run head-to-head. In the five times Formal and Musgrave have raced against one another at the SuperNationals, Formal has finished better in three of years (2014-2016).
