EKN Trackside: 2017 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SpringNationals – Sunday Report

The 2017 edition of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SpringNationals completed Sunday at the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma, California. The fourth round of the championship program welcomed sunny skies as temperatures warmed up, as did the action on the 7/10-mile course. Drivers were a bit more aggressive throughout the day, bringing about a busy day of action for the race officials, with many of the podiums decided by penalties or following tech. It was a big day for Vemme driver Braden Eves, coming through to score another SpringNationals triumph to back up his win last year in Phoenix. Billy Musgrave became the fourth different winner in the S1 to help make the championship chase even more interesting heading to the SummerNationals in New Castle.

EKN Trackside: 2017 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour SpringNationals – Saturday Report
Sunday, 07 May 2017 07:32

An emotional victory for Nic LeDuc in the S1 Pro (Photo: EKN)

The third and fourth rounds of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour brought the sport’s top drivers to the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma, CA this weekend (May 5-7), and Saturday’s events on the 11-turn circuit were highlighted by huge wins for Nic LeDuc in S1 Pro Stock Honda and Ryan Norberg in X30 Senior. LeDuc did not attend the WinterNationals, so his victory will not likely play in the title chase, but on the other hand, Norberg’s triumph over a stacked 44-kart X30 Senior field has drastically improved his chance to defend his 2017 title and national #1 plate.

Despite high than normal winds, the weather was almost ideal with temperatures in the high-60s and the track’s layout opened up many opportunities for overtaking. That said, the racing was much more aggressive and contact-filled than the series opener at NOLA Motorsports Park in March. Even with the video marshalling system in place, drivers appeared to revert back to their less-than-stellar racecraft. Qualifying up front, and away from the mid-pack chaos was certainly a key component in a successful day.

There is no greater feeling then returning back to where it all began. Superkarts! USA is set to take pleasure in welcoming the SKUSA Pro Tour back to the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma, California. The 2017 SpringNationals returns back to the same facility where the inaugural SKUSA Pro Tour event took place back in April 2010. It has been a long seven year journey with the organization evolving and the championship series establishing itself as THE pinnacle program in North American karting.

The bar continues to rise, as this year’s SpringNationals is set to be another record-breaking event as the biggest race ever to be held at the Simraceway karting circuit. Over 200 entries have been collected to date at the SKUSA home office for the May 5-7, 2017 event. The track is among the most picturesque locations in North America, located on the side of Sears Point in the Sonoma wine country, roughly an hour north of downtown San Francisco. It is a true destination location. For the racers, the track is tremendous and ranked among the best there is. The ‘Reverse National’ layout provides some of the best racing with plenty of passing opportunities, and the famous ‘Tic-Tac-Toe’ section of the course is sure to test the drivers.
