Superkarts! USA Begins Registration for Pro Tour SpringNationals
Thursday, 01 March 2012 11:33
Three months have passed since the record breaking SuperNationals XV completed the 2011 season for the Superkarts! USA organization. Now that the 2012 campaign is here, with plans set in motion for the regional programs across the country, preparation has begun for the third year of the SKUSA Pro Tour, starting with the SpringNationals. The event is set for April 20-22 at the Phoenix Kart Racing Association (PKRA) facility in Glendale, Arizona, as the first two rounds of the five-race championship challenge will set the bar for shifterkart and TaG competition in North America. SKUSA is happy to announce that online registration for the SpringNationals has now been opened.

“We had a great launch to the year at our ProKart Challenge opener at Buttonwillow, and the development of two new regional series is very exciting,” offers Tom Kutscher, SKUSA President. “The momentum is positive from last year’s SuperNats, and based on the feedback we’re getting from teams and drivers, I think this year’s Pro Tour is going to be very strong. Now that the online registration is open, we’ll be able to see which drivers will enter to be part of the program.”

Dunford and Johnson Begin ProKart Challenge Title Chase with Victories
Wednesday, 15 February 2012 10:25
Buttonwillow Raceway Park was the location for the opening round of the Superkarts! USA ProKart Challenge this past weekend (February 10-11), and the place was packed. The California regional program welcomed over 100 drivers from up and down the coast, as well as several surrounding states, kicking off the year in style. With SKUSA providing its largest prize purse for the series in its eight-year history, drivers were looking to start their championship chase on the right path. Included in the nine categories competing on the weekend, the Pro divisions saw familiar faces at the top of the podium during the sunset trophy presentation ceremonies, as Brad Dunford and Matt Johnson were the big winners.

The Extreme Karting S1 Pro Stock Moto category welcomed a healthy field of drivers, including two former series champions and three new S1 rookies. Also joining the fray for 2012 is defending SKUSA Pro Tour S4 Master Stock Moto driver Jimmy McNeil. The 38-year-old is a former S1 driver who spent the last few seasons dominating the Master category. Primed for a title run against the best SKUSA has to offer, McNeil showed his strength right off the trailer by setting the fast lap in qualifying. His 47.057-second lap put him clear of 2010 series champ Clinton Schoombee by one-tenth - with defending titlist Dunford in third. The order remained unchanged through the two heat races, as McNeil led both 10-lap motos over the two former champs to set the grid for the main. The feature was the complete opposite, however, as McNeil would not see the checker. McNeil began the race leading the way, but Schoombee was putting on the pressure. Finally, Schoombee led for the first time by slipping past on lap five, putting McNeil in the challenger’s position. Running that way until lap 14, McNeil attempted a pass on Schoombee for the lead when the two made contact. The incident took them both out of the lead, dropping Schoombee back to fourth while McNeil eventually pulled off track, allowing Dunford to inherit the lead. At the checkered, Dunford scored the victory by two seconds over rookie Cory Milne as Schoombee ended the day in third. Last year’s S2 champion Nicky Freytag took fourth in his S1 debut, coming home ahead of reigning S2 Pro Tour title winner Kyle Hathcox. With the graduation of these great drivers, S1 will be incredible to watch in 2012.

For anyone who counts a SKUSA membership card among the stack in their wallet, the SuperNationals in Las Vegas will always be the end goal of a season’s racing. That said, thanks to the list of lucrative programs that Superkarts! USA has devised to reward regional participation, the road to the Rio most definitely starts this coming weekend.
