As part of a sport that has traditionally been overwhelmed by far too many classes, the continuing growth of the Superkarts! USA organization is being directed at a much tighter focus. The newest announcement from the operation’s Temecula headquarters is the unveiling of a reworked class structure that will continue SKUSA’s dedication to the Stock Moto and TaG categories. At the beginning of the decade, Superkarts! USA benefited from a very simple class structure, and the time has come to re-organize the current line-up. All of the current classes remain in the program, but several will be renamed and re-organized to present a more properly tiered system.
Beginning with the 2010 season, this new structure will become the foundation of SKUSA’s future growth, steering the organization clear of karting’s over-flowing mess of categories. The reworked line-up will keep the organization’s ‘S’ nomenclature and will run from S5 up to S1. The program will be headlined by the S1 class - the new name for the current S3 formula - which is the organization’s Stock Moto Expert offering. S3 and S4 have become the backbone of the SKUSA movement, and the excitement over affordable Stock Moto racing has pushed them to the forefront. With S1 positioned at the ‘Pro’ class, the new S2 category will be tabbed as the ‘Amateur Stock Moto’ class. S3 will be re-invented as a new Stock Moto class for Masters drivers. Several current G1 Masters drivers have made the move from the ICC or built moto-powered class to the Stock Moto package, prompting SKUSA to fuel this development by giving the 30+ year-old drivers a chance to enjoy the affordability and reliability of the Stock Honda in an official capacity. |

There can be no arguing the fact that the current economic recession has had a major effect on the sport of karting. It has no doubt curtailed the influx of new drivers to our racing community, but it is also re-focusing the existing base of competitors, causing many of them to reconsider their options. In many cases, local clubs are seeing an increase in participation due to the fact that racers are electing to run closer to home, lessening the cost of travel. The traveling national series and large special events, such as this weekend’s Rock Island Grand Prix, have been the hardest hit. However, a shining light in the sport remains the upcoming Superkarts! USA SuperNationals, which is set for the November 18-22 weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada. Last year’s return to the Rio All-Suites Hotel and Casino, coupled with the focused class structure and 13-year history, has given some indication that the race has become ‘recession proof’.  With news of Superkarts! USA’s return to the Rio All-Suite Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, the 13th annual SKUSA SuperNationals is once again poised to be one of the biggest kart races in the world. Wasting no time and only days after the official announcement, prestigious eyewear and apparel manufacturer Oakley has confirmed a return to sponsoring the marquee karting event.
Oakley has pledged another significant involvement for this year’s race, underscoring their commitment to the sport of karting as a whole - and its ‘Superbowl’ event in the SuperNationals. “Last year was Oakley’s first at the SuperNats and we were absolutely blown away,” commented Oakley’s motorsport marketing manager Todd Hayes. “The caliber of the event, the competition, and the buzz the entire race generates aligns perfectly with our brand.” |
