The KA100 Junior category made its debut at the SKUSA SuperNationals last year, and its growth across North America continued throughout the 2019 season. A total of 30 drivers took part on the SKUSA Pro Tour, with many more competing in regional and club level programs utilizing the IAME engine – which was originally manufactured for the Australian market. This year’s class is sold out, far eclipsing the total of 35 from a year ago.
Ironically, the inaugural winner at the SuperNationals for KA100 Junior came from Australia. James Wharton made the long trek to beat out the competition for the 2018 victory in the category. Wharton (Parolin) has been competing in Europe this season, and unfortunately recorded a DNF at the FIA Karting World Championship following a top-10 finish in the European Championship. It was nine years ago that a young Patricio O’Ward crossed the finish line to claim the first-ever TaG Cadet victory at the SKUSA SuperNationals, held that year outside the Rio as it is again in 2019. Fast forward to today, and the two-time SuperNats winner has become the face of the Arrow McLaren SP team on the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series. In 2011, Florida native Logan Sargeant drove to his first of two SuperNationals victories, and then later became the first USA driver to win the Junior world karting championship in 2015. All the previous nine winners have propelled their careers in karting into the many levels of motorsports, spring-boarding off victory at the SuperNationals. A pre-entry total of 45 drivers have set a new record in the Micro Swift division at the SKUSA SuperNationals. The class was added to the SKUSA Pro Tour and SuperNationals back in 2016, and this grid will be the largest ever. Brazilian Vinicius Tessaro was the inaugural winner while Great Britain’s Vinnie Phillips earned the victory in 2017. Last year, American Ben Maier kept the title in the USA to make it three different countries represented by the winners over the first three years. The 2019 battle could provide a fourth as drivers representing eight different countries fill the field. A defending race winner is not available this time around, as Maier has graduated to the Mini Swift category, thereby opening the door for a fourth different winner in as many years. The 2019 edition of the California ProKart Challenge came to a close at the end of September, wrapping up an astonishing 15th season for the Superkarts! USA regional program. The season was made up of five events, including six rounds of racing toward the championship program for the 17 categories. The year began in Buttonwillow and was followed up by the first double-round weekend at CalSpeed. Trips to Monterey and Santa Maria began the second half of the season before completing the year at the 11th edition of the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix. Those able to claim a championship or finish top-three in the standings will be honored at the California ProKart Challenge Awards Banquet on October 26.
For the sixth time in seven years, the Croc Promotion USA/Mad Old Nut Pro Shifter category will recognize Billy Musgrave as the series champion — a win streak carried over from 2018 with six wins last season. Musgrave continued that through much of the season, winning the first five rounds before placing second in his Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix title defense. The five victories in 2019 was good enough to give Musgrave his sixth series championship. Jake French, the 2019 SOLGP victor, ended the year in second, with Cody Hodgson in third.

As they have for the past many years, Superkarts! USA put a cap on their flagship California ProKart Challenge season at the Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix this past weekend. The straight-forward yet challenging five-turn layout has always provided exciting racing, and the Lancaster community comes out each year to support the event and cheer on the drivers. The festival atmosphere is always buzzing on Saturday night, with a concert, a car show and countless food vendors. On track, Croc Promotions USA’s Jake French made his second trip to Lancaster a victorious one, as the Texan outgunned his teammate and defending race winner Billy Musgrave for the victory in the Pro Shifter class, while Connor Robles scored the biggest win of his young career, celebrating a Pro Shifter 2 triumph. In X30 Senior, four-time defending SKUSA Pro Tour champion Ryan Norberg of Rolison Performance Group topped the field in his SOLGP debut, while Oliver Calvo came out on top of the KA100 Senior class, which was the largest of the event at 28 entries.
