It’s been over four months since the Superkarts! USA staff was trackside for one of their national events, going all the way back to the Pro Tour SummerNationals in August at New Castle Motorsports. When the calendar turned over to a new year, SKUSA pressed the reset button and packed up their circus at its Temecula, CA headquarters and headed east for the fourth edition of their Winter Series at AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires. The opening round of the two-weekend, four-event series was completed on Saturday under ideal weather conditions in south Florida, and multi-time SKUSA champion Ryan Norberg looked to have stolen the show in the X30 Senior main event, coming from 12th on the grid to score the win. A pushback bumper penalty dropped him to fourth, and elevated Aaron Benoit (Tony Kart) to the big victory. In the KA100 Senior class, Brandon Lemke (Merlin) emerged with the win in a thrilling battle with Hannah Greenemeier (Kosmic), while Kai Sorensen (Parolin) notched his first SKUSA victory with a strong performance in X30 Junior. All in all, penalties played quite the role in the overall outcome.

Norberg was on his game from the get-go, timing in second to Alessandro de Tullio (Parolin) in Rolison Performance Group X30 qualifying, but all did not go perfectly for the four-time Pro Tour champ. Norberg bolted away from the grid for the Prefinal and led the field for an additional pace lap, and was it with a 10-second penalty for ‘manipulating the start’. This dropped him to 12th for the start of the 22-lap final, but he was quickly on the move, advancing forward to take the lead on lap 15. Arias Deukmedjian (Kart Republic) was all over Norberg during the final laps and was primed to pounce on the final circuit. With the leader running the defensive lines through the hairpins, Deukmedjian got a strong run out of the second hairpin to put slightly ahead of Norberg heading to the left-hand turn 10. Deukmedjian was on the outside and tried to move to the apex, but it appeared as though Norberg still had a significant position and contact was made. Deukmedjian went off-track as Norberg continued on to the win, and he then came back on-track in what the officials deemed an unsafe manner.

EKN Trackside – SKUSA Winter Series – Round 3 Report

The Superkarts! USA Winter Series is wrapping up this weekend at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires, and the third round of the four-race series on Saturday provided some incredible action. The 12-turn, 0.7-mile track is being run in the clockwise direction for this doubleheader, and the technical nature of this layout provided more than enough of a challenge for the drivers in the paddock this weekend. Piquet Sports’ Olin Galli (CRG) proved to be the man to beat in X30 Senior, taking the lead midway through the race before pulling away to score the victory. In the X30 Junior and KA100 Junior classes, Italian phenom Andrea Kimi Antonello steered his KartSport North America Kart Republic chassis to dominant wins to extend his victory streak to six straight races to begin the 2020 SKUSA season. Antonelli has not yet been beat in the Winter Series this year and has all but clinched both class championships.

Galli qualified on pole for the Rolison Performance Group X30 Senior class, and led early in the Prefinal before RPG’s Ryan Norberg (Kosmic) assumed the point on lap three, holding the position to take the win to earn the inside front row starting spot for the 22-lap main event. After the initial opening lap chaos that saw Arias Deukmedjian jumping the point, Galli quickly assumed the lead and was never challenged after that, leaving those behind him to fight for the final podium positions. A scrap for the position developed between Norberg and Deukmedjian that came to head on the final lap, as Deukmedjian was able to overtake the point leader and four-time SKUSA Pro Tour for the position. It was a strong performance by Deukmedjian, but the podium for Norberg was his third straight and has positioned him solidly to defend his Winter Series championship on Sunday. Solo Kart USA’s Louie Westover earned his second top-five finish with a fourth-place result while impressive rookie senior Luca Mars (Redspeed) capped the top-five.

The third second of the Superkarts! USA Winter Series is set to conclude this weekend at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex presented by MG Tires. The Homestead, Miami facility will welcome competitors once again, returning after the opening event in January. The difference between the two events, the track direction and possibly weather. For Rounds Three and Four, the 7/10-mile course will go in the clockwise direction. While a short rain shower hit the area last month, more precipitation is forecasted for the February weekend which may have a big impact on those reaching the podium and earning top spots in the championship chases.

Wednesday and Thursday were unofficial practice with Friday hosting five official sessions for testing. Round 3 is set for Saturday, including qualifying, Prefinal and Final. Round 4 is a repeat format on Sunday. The championship chase will conclude on Sunday, with drivers taking the best three of the four rounds to count toward the final point standings.

eKartingNews.com is set for the opening event of its 2020 Trackside Live program. The voice of Superkarts! USA, EKN’s own Rob Howden, will be calling the action all weekend.
