ProKart Challenge South Revamps for Round Two at Willow Springs
Wednesday, 18 February 2009 23:06
One thing that can be said about the Superkarts! USA organization and its ProKart Challenge South program is the success of their open policy of feedback from their racers and teams. SKUSA President Tom Kutscher and his staff have always taken into consideration the needs of their racers, and the 2009 season will be no different. As the program prepares for the upcoming round at the Willow Springs Raceway kart track in Rosamond, CA on February 28, they have made some improvements to the program by adjusting the minimum weight in the S4 class and introducing the KF2 program to the series.

Following a driver weight survey held at the opening round at CalSpeed Karting on January 24, the ProKart Challenge has made the decision to raise the minimum weight in the S4 class from 405 lbs. back to its previous 415 lbs, and has even added an S4-Magnum class in the Southern region – with the minimum weight set at 440 lbs – which has already seen strong response to date. These changes will be implemented at the Willow Springs event and will be in place for the balance of the ‘09 PKC South season. ProKart Challenge also surveyed the PKC North competitors in the S4 class from ’08, and has made the same weight adjustment to 415 lbs. for that division.  Read Full Story on EKN.

S4 Driver Weight Goes Back to 415– And a 440lb S4 Class is Considered!
Tuesday, 03 February 2009 20:00
As you probably know, we conducted an S4 driver weight survey at our first ProKart Challenge CalSpeed race on Jan. 24th.

Based on those results (and feedback from potential S4 racers), we have decided that it would be in the best interest of fair competition to change the overall class weight for the S4 class back to the previous 415 lbs for the balance of the 2009 PKC So Cal season.

This change will be effective with our next race at Willow Kart on Feb. 28th, and will be reflected on our website shortly. We are also in the process of surveying the Nor Cal S4 drivers from last year, to be able to make a final decision on that region as well. If you have comments or questions regarding this change, we welcome your input! Please call our office at 951-491-0808 or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We also wanted to let you know that based on feedback from the field, we are seeing demand for an even 'heavier' stock Honda class in our 2009 PKC So Cal lineup -- what Tom is calling a '440 Magnum' class, with a total minimum weight of 440 lbs.

If you or anyone you know would be interested in running this class, please let us know right away. If we get enough interest, we are willing to add it to our race schedule -- and the series championship.

Former IndyCar Driver Invades PKC SoCal CalSpeed Event
Wednesday, 28 January 2009 22:58
To commence its fifth year of competition, the ProKart Challenge South series – a Superkarts! USA regional program – began the 2009 season at the CalSpeed Karting facility in Fontana, California this past weekend. Seventy drivers in eight classes began their chase for championship glory at the 7/10-mile circuit located just outside the Auto Club Speedway (formerly the California Speedway). Wet weather would hinder the Friday practice day, but not the spirit of the opening event, as many drivers still took part in the festivities – including a dinner provided by the series on Friday evening. This led to nearly-dry racing weather on Saturday, dampened by just a light sporadic sprinkling around the course, where some of the best drivers from the western half of the United States were in attendance, including former IndyCar driver Alex Barron, reigning PKC South S3 Champion Bobby Legate, 2005 SuperNationals winner Lorenzo Mandarino and 2008 PKC South S5 Champion 14-year-old Race Liberante, who has moved up to contend in S3. The veteran Barron would eventually steal the show, putting in a great performance in the headline S3 category.

Barron would contend the S3 division, the top level of the spec Honda program in the ProKart Challenge. A former promoter of a spec moto-based series, Barron is no stranger to the six-speed Honda CR125. The 38-year-old put his entry third on the chart during the qualifying session as former SKUSA SuperNationals SuperPro winner Lorenzo Mandarino took the top honors by 15-thousandths of a second over reigning PKC S3 champion Bobby Legate. Clinton Schoombee was fourth on the time sheets, putting the top four lap times within one-tenth of a second. Race Liberante qualifies in the seventh position – just four-tenths off the top qualifiers.
