It has been over two months since the California ProKart Challenge program was trackside. After the lengthy time off, the Superkarts! USA regional series is set for a return to the Santa Maria Karting Association facility for the penultimate round of the championship program. The Santa Maria, California facility on the ‘K’ track configuration is the site of Round Five on September 10-11 in the six-round championship series schedule. Following the double round weekend at CalSpeed, the format for Santa Maria features the two-day schedule with practice and qualifying on Saturday, followed by Prefinal and Final action on Sunday.

Among those leading the way in the point standings heading into the Santa Maria weekend is multi-time series champion and four-time SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave who is the top driver in the Factory Karts Pro Shifter chase. Musgrave has three wins in four rounds, holding a strong advantage over Ansel Baldovin and Luca Bortone. The largest category of the season has been the HRT Driver Development KA100 Senior class, welcoming 38 different drivers over the first four rounds. Ethan Lampe has yet to win. However, he leads the championship standings by 18 points over two-time winner Blake Nash, with fellow two-time winner Frankie Mossman sitting back in third.

Four different drivers have stood on top of the podium in as many rounds of the KA100 Junior class presented by Nash Motorsportz. Charlie Smith won Round Three and leads the standings by only 13 points over Keagan Kaminski – who has yet to win in 2022. As has Alex Mercado, a close third in the standings while Round One winner William Rasmussen and Round Four victor Kane Martin make it a very close top-five in points. The Empire Karts Mini Swift class has seen three different winners in 2022. The only two-time winner – Johnie Stamps – leads the championship chase by 90 points over three-time podium finisher Nixon Ellsworth. Round One winner Michael McGaughy sits third, needing to gain points over the last two rounds to be in contention.

A string of four top-two finishes over the opening four rounds puts Matthew Cagle at the top of the standings in the P1 Racing Engines Micro Swift championship. Cagle won the opener at Buttonwillow and has three straight runner-up results since. Round Three victor Julian Sanchez trails by 55 points going into the final two events, while two-time winner Troy Ferguson sits third. Michael Guasch is the point leader in Factory Karts Master Shifter thanks to two victories, with Round Four winner Luis Quinones sitting second.

Brian Phillipsen and Brett Harrelson each have two victories in the Mike Manning Karting KA100 Master class. Phillipsen is the championship leader with three podium finishes thus far. Ronnie Swaim has a similar record, sitting second in points while Ron Schoonover is third, not yet finishing on the podium in the first four rounds. Harrelson sits fifth in points behind Tim Meyer, another driver with three podium finishes. Robert Switzler has four podium finishes on the year, leading the way in the Leading Edge Motorsports X30 Master standings. Switzler holds a 105-point advantage over Scott Nealon – with two-time winner Billy Cleavelin in third.
