PKC South Returns to Qualcomm Stadium for Round Five Action
Monday, 13 June 2011 19:36
ProKart Challenge South, the flagship Superkarts! USA regional program, returns to action on June 17-18 outside the Qualcomm Stadium for round five of the 2011 season. In cooperation with the San Diego Karting Association and the SMX Racing SuperMoto program, the three organizations will hold one event on the stadium’s parking grounds in the same day. A .9-mile, 10-turn temporary circuit will host the two karting programs with a modified course, including multiple jumps to be set up for the SuperMoto categories.

The San Diego Karting Association will mix in their regular club classes within the SKUSA class structure with similar classes running on track in the same group, scored separate. Those classes include: Kid Karts, KPV 1, Junior 1, Open Shifter, KPV 2, KPV 4 Senior, YC Heavy, Shifter Light, Shifter Heavy, and 80cc Shifter. The SuperMoto riders of SMX Racing will be split into two groups, running in two separate time slots in the rotation of classes.

“The San Diego Karting Association has always been a big supporter of SKUSA and the ProKart Challenge,” stated Tom Kutscher, Superkarts! USA President. “The backdrop for this event reminds me of our first years in charge of the SuperNationals in Las Vegas, and the racers down here are very welcoming. I’m excited that we have been able to partner up with the SuperMoto group as well, as it allows us to show fellow motorsports junkies what professional karting is all about – and we can witness just how crazy those motorcycle guys are on the same tracks we race at across the country. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

While the event will be a unique and special edition of the PKC South program, the battle for the season championships is heating up – with only two rounds left in the best 5 of 6 title chase. Victory at the Streets of Willow event gave Brad Dunford 10 additional points overall in the Extreme Karting-sponsored S1 Pro Stock Moto championship chase over defending champion Clinton Schoombee. While Dunford scored the feature win, Schoombee was best in the two heat races to help keep Dunford’s point advantage to just 25 markers heading into round five. Ryon Beachner is still right there, only 20 back of Clinton. Peter Abba sits in fourth, still mathematically in the hunt and capable of stealing points from the top three in the final two rounds.

The chase in the Tony Kart West-sponsored TaG Senior category is closing back together, thanks to the recent performances by Devin Lindsey. With a win at the Streets of Willow round, he now trails point leader Travis Lowe by just 69 points. Lowe has led the standings since the opening round and could be in jeopardy in San Diego. Billy Cleavelin and Matt Johnson are waiting in the wings, needing two solid final events and the help of the best five of six events counting toward the championship to be able to end the year on top.

The San Diego weekend could produce the first double winner of the season in the 2 Wild Karting-sponsored S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto class – or the division’s fifth different winner. Despite seeing four different winners thus far, Nicky Freytag has been the class of the field with one win and three runner-up finishes to sit atop the point standings. Round two winner Vivek Tandon is 165 markers behind him, with Bryan Lemon and Michael Leib still looking for their first trip to the top of the podium. While he has won three of the four features on the season, the championship is no where near settled for Jimmy McNeil in the G-Phactory-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto category. Round one winner Robert Marks has kept McNeil on his toe’s each weekend, trailing by just 163 points heading into San Diego. With S4 averaging nearly 20 karts every weekend, any number of competitors could step in and take the top spot of the podium from McNeil in the final two events.

The Select Shifter/DR Kart-sponsored S3 Novice Stock Moto class is down to a three driver battle. Jessica Sollberger continues to hold the lead, with Kellen Guthrie and Sebastian Scaglia trailing. Just 156 points separate the top three, with Sollberger’s two feature wins holding the advantage over the one win each for Guthrie and Scaglia. Guthrie has the momentum, however, completing the event sweep at the Streets of Willow – with a fast Qualcomm Stadium course on tap. Marc Lewis scored his third feature win of the season in the S4 Magnum category, extending his point lead over Robert Morales as they head to round five. Peter Workum has two victories to his credit in the G1 standings and now leads the points by a healthy margin over Howie Idelson.

The chase for the Leading Edge Motorsports-sponsored TaG Master class championship is still up in the air. Reigning #2 national plate holder Steve Wiener holds the point lead, with Kim Ryan and Will Jadiker behind just 80 points. Allan Svela is still in the hunt, looking for his first podium of the season to gain ground on the top three. Carter Williams scored his first victory of the season in the EUSI-sponsored TaG Junior class at Streets of Willow, and now leads the standings over Willy Axton by 69 points. Micah Hendricks will continue his championship chase in the S5 Junior Stock Moto division, sponsored by EUSI.

Colton Herta leads two championship fights in TaG Cadet, sponsored by Phil Giebler Racing. With three wins on the season, he holds a 200 point advantage over Noah Grey for the season championship. By winning the last two rounds, Herta also holds the lead at the halfway mark for the TaG Cadet Rok Cup International Final Shoot-out – with the driver scoring the most points in the program earning an invitation to compete at the October 16 event in Italy. Grey and Brooks are tied for second in the mini-series standings heading to the third of four events for the program.

The ProKart Challenge pre-entry online price of $295 will be available until Wednesday, June 15 at skusastore.com. Signup at the track will be allowed but will cost racers $85 more than the pre-race entry fee. Friday practice will be held from 9am to 5pm. The specially-branded MG ‘SKUSA’ tire – the official tire for all Superkarts! USA events – will be utilized (for all classes except TaG Cadet, which uses the MG-HZ tire). More information regarding round five of the ProKart Challenge South series at the Qualcomm Stadium temporary circuit can be found at the following link (http://www.superkartsusa.com/regional/pkc-south/round-5-2011.html).

Following the Qualcomm event, Superkarts! USA will travel back north for round four of the ProKart Challenge North program, scheduled for July 1-2 in Monterey, California. Information regarding the event – the final SKUSA event prior to the SKUSA SummerNationals on July 15-17 at Grand Junction Motor Speedway in Colorado – will be published in the near future.
