California ProKart Challenge Returns to Historic Adams Motorsports Park May 18-19
Monday, 14 May 2012 11:02
The California ProKart Challenge returns to action this weekend (May 18-19), as the series hosts round three at the famed Adams Motorsports Park. The legendary Riverside facility will welcome racers from all across California and surrounding states, as the six-event championship series completes the first half of the 2012 season. Coming off the record-breaking SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals and successful starts for two other regional programs, Superkarts! USA is experiencing a great first half of 2012. Another large turnout for the California PKC is expected for Adams, as the second quarter of the year and the championship battles rage on.

The Adams Motorsports Park has been hosting karting action for over 50 years. The 7/10-mile course has been the site of many historic events in the sport, with some big names having competed at the longest running kart racing facility in the world. Racers will be traveling to Adams this weekend, ready for a fun event SKUSA-style, along with the chance to qualify for a part of the $65,000 prize package the organization has offered this season. The championships are far from being over, with just two weekends in the books and plenty of racing left in 2012.

On top in the Extreme Karting S1 Pro Stock Moto division is Jimmy McNeil. An error in the opening round main event cost him the victory, but he rebounded in Willow Springs to score the event win. He now leads the points over 2010 champion Clinton Schoombee by 44 points, with round one winner Brad Dunford sitting third. Matt Johnson has gotten off to a solid start for 2012 in the Leading Edge Motorsports TaG Senior category. The Vegas driver is just 20 points out from a perfect score after sweeping the round two proceedings. Defending champion Travis Lowe is second, with SKUSA #2 plate holder Dakota Dickerson in third. Matias Podboj has recorded near maximum points to hold the top spot in the S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto class sponsored by Phil Giebler Racing. Jamie Wilson and Michael Leib are leading the charge against Podboj.

With two different winners in the first two events, it’s PP Mastro that has been the most consistent to lead the point standings in the Pure Karting-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto division. He leads over Doug Hayashi and round one winner Robert Marks, who swept the opening event. Currently leading the TaG Master category sponsored by Buddy Rice Karting is NorCal driver Ethan Wilson. Unfortunately, a broken wrist in a wreck at the SKUSA SpringNationals will put him on the sidelines for the next few rounds. This moves Pro Tour point leader Paul Bonilla into the driver’s seat for the regional title, with Paul Hohlbein and Glenn McKinnon trailing. Steve Ryckebosch is the leader in the Select Shifter/DR Racing S3 Novice Stock Moto class. Leading by 95 points after two rounds, Ryckebosch is the driver to beat -- with Todd Wilson and Chalee Siengthai second and third.

2011 TaG Junior champion Carter Williams has started his title defense in the right direction, holding the point lead in the Russell Karting Specialties category after the first two rounds. A near sweep at round two put him 70 points in the lead over class rookie and two-time TaG Cadet champion Colton Herta. Round one winner Curtis Paul remains in the hunt, sitting third. Williams also leads the S5 Junior Stock Moto standings thus far. The Sunshine Daydream Creations-sponsored TaG Cadet class is up for grabs, with the top three drivers within 15 points of each other after the first two events. Jack von Quilich has been the most consistent to hold the lead in the standings. Just 13 points back is round two winner Anthony Sawyer, with Hunter Kelly only 2 points behind him.

Round three is set to begin Friday, May 18 with a full day of practice beginning at 9:00 am and running until 5:00 pm on the ‘Modified Optional Course’ in the clockwise direction, same as 2011. Race day is Saturday, May 19, and features the challenging format of practice, qualifying, two heat races and a main event. A SKUSA membership/racing license is required, along with all kart specifications under the 2012 SKUSA rulebook. SKUSA is offering the same great price to pre-enter ($295, tax included) by Wednesday, May 16 at midnight, and this rate includes your race entry and race tires. Sign up now at www.skusastore.com. All event details, including lodging, camping, gate hours and other information, can be found at the PKC Event Page.
