California ProKart Challenge Returns to Santa Maria Kart Track
Tuesday, 14 August 2012 10:21
The California ProKart Challenge returns to action this weekend (August 17-18) when it hosts the fifth round of the 2012 season at the Santa Maria Karting Association facility in Santa Maria. A favorite by the competitors and their families, the SMKA kart track has been a familiar meeting ground for the NorCal contingent to meet with the Southern California crowd, hosting the West Coast Shootout in previous years. After a year off of the Superkarts! USA calendar, California PKC drivers will contest the penultimate round of the year at this destination location once again.

With the best five of six results counting toward the final standings, the championships and pieces of the $65,000 prize package are still up for grabs. Matt Johnson has been the best in the Leading Edge Motorsports-sponsored TaG Senior category. Starting out the year with two victories, Johnson has continued to run up front and leads the title chase by 201 points. Defending champ Travis Lowe has two runner-up finishes this season, shut out thus far in the win column to sit second. With his victory in Buttonwillow back in June, Jimmy McNeil secured the lead in the S1 Pro Stock Moto championship, sponsored by Extreme Karting/Vemme Kart. Round three winner Nicky Freytag currently sits second, 124 points out of the lead. Just 24 markers behind him is Ryon Beachner, riding on two straight runner-up finishes.

Matias Podboj and Michael Leib have a good battle in the S2 Semi-Pro Stock Moto standings. Podboj won the first two feature races for the Phil Giebler Racing-sponsored category, but Leib has returned the fight by outscoring Podboj in the last two rounds. The gap is just 168 points heading into Santa Maria, with another full round of racing to come in September. PP Mastro has a stranglehold on the Pure Karting-sponsored S4 Master Stock Moto title chase. The former multi-time G1 champion leads Robert Marks by 185 points, thanks to a worst finish of third over the first four rounds. Marks has two podium finishes to his credit thus far. Three drivers remain in the hunt for the S3 Novice Stock Moto standings, sponsored by Select Shifter/DR Racing. Todd Wilson currently leads by 115 points over Steve Ryckebosch, with Chalee Siengthai in third.

After racing the TaG Senior category in the opening round, Billy Cleavelin moved back to the TaG Masters division and has recorded three straight feature wins to now lead the Buddy Rice Karting-sponsored championship. The three-time SuperNationals winner has been tough to beat as of late, with Paul Grey in the challenger position. Also on fire this year is defending TaG Junior champion Carter Williams. With two wins and a runner-up to his credit, Williams is leading the Russell Karting Specialties title chase after four rounds. Former two-time TaG Cadet champ Colton Herta stands in second, back by 168 points with two podium finishes recorded. Noah Grey and Christian Brooks enter the weekend third and fourth, still with a chance in the title fight.

Just one point separates Jack von Quilich and Anthony Sawyer in TaG Cadet, sponsored by Sunshine Daydream Creations. Sawyer has two wins while von Quilich has stood on the podium three times, including a victory last round. Hunter Kelly is still in the chase, only 30 points out of first. Any one of the three could leave Santa Maria with the title. Carter Williams continues to lead the S5 Junior Stock Moto category, while Ken Manning has the advantage over Luke Bianco in S4 Magnum Stock Moto.

The California PKC event at Santa Maria Karting Association facility is set to begin Friday, August 17 with a full day of practice beginning at 9:00 am and running until 5:00 pm on the ‘K’ layout. Saturday, August 18 will be race day and features the challenging format of practice, qualifying, two heat races and a main event. A SKUSA membership/racing license is required to compete, along with all kart specifications under the 2012 SKUSA rulebook. SKUSA is offering the same great price to pre-enter online ($295, tax included) by Wednesday, August 15 at midnight, and this rate includes race entry and race tires.
