The 2017 season is reaching the final stretch as the calendar readies for a turn over to October. That signals the return to the city streets for the California ProKart Challenge as the annual Streets of Lancaster Grand Prix hosts the final round of the 2017 championship. Since 2012, the city of Lancaster has welcomed the Superkarts! USA flagship program and its many racers from around the world to take part in what has now become the largest street race in western North America.
The southern California city of Lancaster hosts a three-day festival – September 29-October 1 – centered around the street race, providing charity and local celebrities a chance to get behind the wheel of concession karts on the very same circuit hundreds of karters will compete on. The California PKC competitors contest Round Six of the championship program over a special Saturday/Sunday format for the majority of the categories. New last year, the S1/S2 and X30 Senior main events were moved to Saturday night under the lights, contested between the charity and celebrity main events, in front of large crowds surrounding the BLVD district.

Three drivers stood out at the WinterNationals in the S1 Pro Stock Honda division. Austin Garrison (J3 / CompKart) shocked the field after a wild opening few laps to escape with the lead and go on to score his first class victory. The former S2 champion could not find the magic again on Sunday, with former Pro Tour winner AJ Myers sweeping the day toward victory. Myers (TB Kart USA) ran second to Garrison on Sunday, giving the Florida driver the championship lead, ahead of 2017 SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave by 40 points. Musgrave (MRC / Aluminos) stood on the podium both days at NOLA to put him second in the standings, and currently holds the top spot in the EKN Driver Rankings Powered by Bell Racing USA. The four-time California ProKart Challenge champion is the only winner from the last two SKUSA Pro Tour events at PKRA to be in this year’s field. The penultimate round of the California ProKart Challenge was completed over Labor Day weekend at the Monterey Bay Karters facility in Marina, California. Just off the Pacific Ocean coast, karters from all over the western half of the United States visited the northern California destination area to compete in the fifth round of the Superkarts! USA flagship regional championship. Categories for IAME and Honda divisions took on the course, sitting alongside the city’s airport. The event was important for many, trying to establish better ground in the title chases, while others took advantage to gain their first victories and podiums of 2017.

 The Texas ProKart Challenge – presented by 3G Kart Racing/Burger King®/Fernelius Alvarez Attorneys/Dallas Karting Complex – hosted round seven and eight on August 16-18 at the Oklahoma Motorsports Complex. Revered as one of the top circuits in the country, Superkarts! USA and United States Rotax Max Challenge competitors from the southern states took on the challenging 8/10-mile course as the ten-round championship series looks to close out the 2013 season.
The weekend welcomed perfect racing conditions, with cooler than normal temperatures through the tree days in Norman, Oklahoma. Friday evening provided a great meal, courtesy of Rey Ferreyro and his local Chick-fil-A. All podium finishers received Motul products, with top end rebuild kits for the Stock Moto categories courtesy of Honda Performance Development, and three sets of Mojo tires to three Rotax drivers. In total, over $2,500 in awards and prizes were handed out on the weekend, including free entries and free hotels to the season finale. Of course, the weekend went smooth thanks to the great hospitality provided by the Berryhill family at the OMC facility. On-track, many of the usual suspects were found on top of the podium throughout the weekend, as the championship chases turned another page.

The 2018 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour is underway with the running of the WinterNationals on March 2-4 at the NOLA Motorsports Park in Avondale, Louisiana. The second edition of the WinterNationals featured 212 drivers in five IAME categories and four Honda divisions around the 1.1-mile karting course. The event kicked off the championship chases at the SKUSA Pro Tour, with two rounds in the six-round title chase completed. Teams and competitors are now turning their focus toward the next event on the SKUSA Pro Tour calendar, the SKUSA SpringNationals.
On Sunday, Superkarts! USA confirmed a change in location for the 2018 SpringNationals. Originally scheduled for the Simraceway Performance Karting Center in Sonoma, California, the May 4-6 event has been moved to the Phoenix Kart Racing Association facility in Glendale, Arizona. The ‘Formula K Raceway’ circuit is among the most challenging courses in North America, and site of the inaugural SKUSA ProMoto Tour event in 1999.
“I’m interested in supporting tracks that support what we do,” stated SKUSA President Tom Kutscher. “That’s the honest truth. We began our SKUSA Pro Tour in April 2010 in Sonoma, and brought it back last year with record numbers. Our goal was to break that mark in 2018; however, management has changed over the last few months at the facility. I did not feel comfortable not knowing if key pieces would be in place when we got there in May. I see no reason to bring the largest karting program in North America to a facility that is not interested in working with us today or in the future.”
