Back at the beginning of April, IAME Italy issued a press release stating that it was re-engineering its North American distribution program by clearing the slate, replacing its three existing importers with two new operations – IAME USA East and IAME USA West. GoPro Motorplex owners Justin Marks and Eric Jones were announced to head up the East Coast component, while Superkarts! USA’s Tom Kutscher was revealed as the owner of the West Coast effort. EKN sat down with Kutscher this past week to discuss his motivation for beginning an official connection with IAME, how it will play a role in the future of SKUSA, and how this move corresponds with other steps that he has taken to provide increased stability for his company and cost control for his racers.

This weekend marks the opening of the third season for the continually growing Texas ProKart Challenge – presented by 3G Kart Racing/Burger King®/Chase Racing/Dallas Karting Complex/Fernelius Alvarez Attorneys. Fulfilling the need for a strong regional program in the LoneStarState, series director Dave Pauly established a program combining the United States Rotax Max Challenge and Superkarts! USA categories under one banner. Since 2012, the series has experience expansion with every event and this year’s awards package is scheduled to reach over $30,000 in cash and prizes. The third season for the Texas PKC will start this coming weekend (April 25-27) at the Dallas Karting Complex, located in Caddo Mills, Texas.
Texas ProKart Challenge logoThe opening weekend of the season is, and has been shaping to be an incredible kick off to 2014. Entry lists in all categories are stacked, continues to grow to record numbers as the race weekend approaches. The series was reduced to eight rounds of racing this year, compared to a 10-race program in 2013, making each round crucial to the regional racers looking to secure a series championship. Added to this year’s opening rounds is the addition of many Superkarts! USA Pro Tour competitors from outside the region, as the event serves as a tune-up event for next weekend’s SKUSA SpringNationals.

The third edition of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour WinterNationals came to a close on Sunday, thankfully ending under much better weather conditions. While Saturday was filled with on-and-off rain, the precipitation ended on Sunday during qualifying with the skies above the CalSpeed Karting facility in Fontana, California clearing up enough to welcome the sun for periods of time, at least until the podium ceremonies were completed. The 12 divisions in competition closed out Round Two of the SKUSA Pro Tour championship chase, welcoming another group of new winners into the history books.
Winning at the SKUSA Pro Tour level, or in 2019 for that matter, is nothing new to AJ Myers. The Mad Old Nut Racing / Croc Promotion USA driver shined in the Pro Shifter 1/2 25-lap Final to grab his fourth career Pro Tour victory. The day did not begin at the top however, as Myers finished ninth in the qualifying session. The track was not completely dry from overnight rain, yet the quickest option was still the dry Evinco tires. Alex Keyes (PSL / Birel ART) came out of the session with fast time, but it was CRG Nordam’s Kyle Wick who drove away in the Prefinal. Wick led the first lap of the Final until an issue on lap two dropped him out of the top-five. This gave Pro 2 driver Race Liberante (J3 / CompKart) the lead, where he stayed until Myers and Saturday winner Andrew Bujdoso (MONR / Croc) ran him down. The two drove away to score another 1-2 finish, this time with Myers on top. Liberante was run down by a charging Wick and, when making a pass in turn four, Wick slide wide into Liberante, who made contact with the barriers on the outside of turn four. That ended his race and a chance at the win in class. Wick would go on to place third, with Keawn Tandon (DRT / DR Kart) in fourth and Prescott Campbell (MRC / Aluminos) in fifth. Max Hewitt (CRG) scored the victory in Pro 2, his second career win on the Pro Tour, with Michael Ilavia (Crosslink / Exprit) and Blair Hosie (MRC / Aluminos) joining him on the podium. After a small hiatus for national competition, Superkarts! USA’s flagship regional program, the CaliforniaProKart Challenge, returns to action at the Auto Club Speedway in Fontana for Round 3 of the 2018 championship on June 1-2. The popular venue also plays host to the Los Angeles Kart Club (LAKC) and is among a favorite of local competitors, thanks in part to its proximity and wide variety of configurations.
While the 2018 championship is only two races in, some early season favorites look poised to make their bid for the regional title. National #2 Billy Musgravecontinues to be the man to beat in the Mad Old Nut / Mad Croc USA Pro S1 category. The MRC factory pilot has not put a wheel wrong since his SuperNationals 21 victory. But Matias Podboj and Brian Keck continue to give chase and will no doubt look to upset the PKC points leader. Musgrave runs well at the paved CalSpeed circuit, so the two will have their work cut out for them.
