EKN Trackside: 2019 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour WinterNationals – Saturday Report

The opening round of the 2019 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour was completed in 100% wet conditions at the CalSpeed Karting facility. Rain was on and off all day in Fontana, California for the first day of action at the third edition of the WinterNationals with only a few glimpses of the sun breaking through the heavy clouds that surround the area and block off the mountain view. The 12 categories on hand battled the conditions and each other throughout the day to claim the steps on the podium to begin the chase for the championships on the right path.

The IAME SSE 175cc powerplant made its debut on the SKUSA Pro Tour with Pro Shifter 1 and Pro Shifter 2. A 24-driver field made up the inaugural event with Mathias Ramirez (PSL / Birel ART) setting fast time in qualifying. Jumping up to second on the final lap was Pro 2 driver Race Liberante (J3 / CompKart), making his first start with SKUSA since 2009. Liberante was able to grab the holeshot in the Prefinal, leading all 10 laps for the overall win and Pro 2 victory with Ramirez top driver in Pro 1. The opening lap was wild, including Liberante not able to get off the line clean. As they came around on the opening circuit, Mad Old Nut Racing’s Andrew Bujdoso (Croc Promotion) was into the lead. Bujdoso never put a wheel wrong throughout the 21 laps, scoring his first SKUSA Pro Tour victory. 2018 SKUSA Pro Tour champion AJ Myers (MONR / Croc) suffered issues in the Prefinal, driving his way from 17th on the grid to the second spot. Rory van der Steur (MRC / Tony Kart) completed the podium. Liberante fought back to fourth overall, winning the Pro 2 division with Max Hewitt (CRG Nordam) and Calvin Ming (MRC / Aluminos) joining him on the podium. Billy Musgrave (MRC / Aluminos) suffered a flat tire early in the Prefinal, driving his way from 20th to fourth in class, working past Kyle Wick (CRG Nordam) late in the race. SKUSA Competition Bulletin: 2014 Pro Tour Priority Pre-Entry Program
Pro Tour SpringNationals competitors to receive priority entry for Modesto Grand Prix SummerNationals
Superkarts! USA is extremely pleased with the tremendous interest in the upcoming SKUSA Pro Tour SpringNationals on May 2-4, 2014 at the Dallas Karting Complex in Caddo Mills, Texas. The entry numbers are expected to max out in several categories, and in keeping with the intent of the Priority Pre-Entry Program for the SuperNationals, SKUSA has elected to offer the SpringNationals participants the first opportunity to enter the Modesto Grand Prix SummerNationals. There is great interest in the northern California street race, but Superkarts! USA believes that it is imperative that those running for the full Pro Tour championship, shown by their participation in Texas, should be given the chance to run the full series through this additional priority entry program.

As such, all SpringNationals participants will be given special access to registration for the SummerNationals for at least a week before it is opened fully to the public. Additional information will be supplied at a later date.

It was announced during the California ProKart Challenge event at the Adams Motorsports Park this past weekend that Superkarts! The April 19 event at Adams will see the SKUSA TaG Senior class winner earn one of the ‘free ride’ entries, which includes race tires, an order of fuel and oil, and a guaranteed starting spot on SuperSunday for the main event. An additional SuperNats entry, including race tires and an order of fuel and oil (class to be determined), will be auctioned off at the Adams event, and the money raised will be donated to the City of Hope in honor of Susan Lowe. More info will be posted shortly at www.so-calsprinters.com and at www.adamsmotorsportspark.com.

Retraction: Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge US Rotax Max Challenge ‘Punches’
In a press release on March 27, it was announced that drivers competing in the seven United States Rotax Max Challenge categories as part of the Rocky Mountain ProKart Challenge can earn ‘punches’ toward the US Rotax Grand Nationals. This is the case only at the Grand Junction Motor Speedway events, as part of the CRG-USA Colorado Rotax Series. The May 24-25 and August 30-31 events are included as part of the Grand Junction-based USRMC. The May rounds will count at punches to the 2014 Grand Nationals and the August rounds will count towards 2015. The rounds at the SBR Motorsports Park in Calhan, Colorado on June 21-22 will not count as punches for the USRMC.

Musgrave and Drew Tame Streets of Willow During California ProKart Challenge Weekend

The California ProKart Challenge allowed its racers to stretch out their karting machines for the second round of the 2018 season. On March 30-31, the Superkarts! USA flagship regional program visited the Streets of Willow course at the Willow Springs International Raceway facility in Rosamond, California. The 1.6-mile course – with a reduced layout for X30 Junior and Swift drivers – took racers away from the normal karting track and onto a road course, reaching the highest speeds of the season. The 12 categories were put together into four race groups on the day, sticking with the same qualifying, two heats, and main event format. A number of classes were swept on the day, while others went down to the wire.

All six Stock Honda categories took to the Streets of Willow circuit in a combined race group throughout the day, putting 50 karts on track to make every session a busy one. At the front of the field all day was Billy Musgrave. The four-time series champion and SuperNationals 21 victor swept the Mad Old Nut S1 Pro Stock Honda class, but it was not easy. Musgrave cleared the entire race group by half a second with a 1:15.311-lap time, ahead of S1 rookie Rory van der Steur and Josh Lane, making his return to the California PKC. It was Brian Keck that put the pressure on Musgrave in Heat #1, stealing the lead for four laps until Billy retook the position and the win. Heat #2 saw van der Steur leading four laps before Musgrave resumed the spot – right before a red flag and restart cut the session short. Musgrave and van der Steur were able to get away from everyone in the 14-lap Final, making it a duel for the victory. Rory led the majority of the race, with Musgrave leading the final two circuits. At the line, the two were separated by 76 thousandths of a second at roughly 80mph. Lane was on the podium in third to cap off his return to the seat, while Matias Podboj and Peter Abba completed the top-five.
