The first Superkarts! USA event of 2015 is just two weeks away, as the flagship California ProKart Challenge will open the season on the February 6-7 weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Last year, the first event drew a strong field of drivers and SKUSA officials are excited to once again meet with their racers to begin the chase for this year’s PKC championship titles. The SKUSA staff continues to improve the series in an effort to offer the best value in karting, and they have put together yet another attractive prize package for 2015.
“We’ve made a number of moves over the last couple of years that have been motivated by our goal to stabilize our program and provide great value to our customers,” offered Tom Kutscher, Superkarts! USA President. “I’m excited about our strong relationship with HPD and our new connection with IAME USA, as both will provide new and growing payback to our racers. I’m always thrilled with the value that we offer our drivers, as our focused class structure provides unparalleled track time that includes over 70 laps during a race day. We aim to provide the total package – track time, a fun atmosphere, weekend prizes and season-end rewards.”

2014 was a record breaking season for the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour. During the fifth year of the national program, driver numbers reached an all-time high at both the SpringNationals and SummerNationals. Racers enjoyed the challenging Dallas Karting Complex facility in Caddo Mills, Texas, and took on the city streets of Modesto, California for the first street race incorporated into the Pro Tour calendar. The season wrapped up with SuperNationals XVIII, the last event to be held at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino.
SKUSA Superkarts! USA logoOver the course of the three events, Superkarts! USA welcomed 600 distinct drivers while handing out more than $100,000 in cash and prizes on the year. During the first two events of the Pro Tour, the headline categories (S1 and TaG Senior) competed for a $3,500 cash purse, a possible $30,000 purse at the SuperNationals, and a $12,000 championship purse. Honda Performance Development/HPD provided a $9,000 championship purse for the Stock Moto categories, and the TaG Cadet champion was given a ticket to the 2015 Rok Cup International Final. Each of the eight champions will be included in the 2015 SKUSA ‘Circle of Champions,’ earning a complimentary package for the Pro Tour that includes race entry fees, race tires, and race fuel/oil for all three events – valued overall at $24,000.

After a long season of race promotion and ground breaking organizational efforts, you’d think that Superkarts! USA’s Tom Kutscher would be setting up for a relaxing off-season, taking a little time off before SKUSA’s California ProKart Challenge regional series fires up again in early February. But for the head of the sport’s leading shifter and TaG program, nothing could be further from the truth, as his company is currently in the middle of an important period of evolution. This progression is focused on improving stability while fueling growth, which has seen Superkarts! USA make some aggressive and calculated moves over the past 18 months. In the last year and a half, they made the decision to move away from the multiple-engine TaG program that was part of their foundation, trimming away the engines that were not utilized in any large numbers (Motori and Rok). They also elected to remove the Rotax FR125, whose continuing technical development caused issues and required investment in testing to maintain equality in TaG racing. The end result is that SKUSA will move into 2015 focused on a single supplier of engines for their ‘TaG’ categories, which is a current trend in our sport. Three different models of IAME products will power the single-speed side of the SKUSA equation, with the X30 and Leopards being legal for TaG Senior and TaG Master in 2015. The TaG Junior classes will stick with the Leopard-only approach for one more year, and as recently announced, an ambitious trade-in program will put all of SKUSA’s TaG Cadet drivers on the IAME Mini Swift air-cooled engine for 2015.

A new focus on a single manufacturer for their TaG program has provided Superkarts! USA with some much needed long-term stability, and this is only amplified when paired with the organization’s continued support and dedication to the Stock Moto shifterkart program that utilizes the Honda CR125 engine package. It is impossible to argue that SKUSA is not the leader in the category, as they continue to position the formula has a key segment of their operation. That said, SKUSA’s increased partnership with the IAME product line has brought about speculation that the Italian manufacturer’s gearbox engine could become a replacement for Stock Honda program in SKUSA’s shifterkart categories. SKUSA wishes that it be known that this is by no means the case. SKUSA remains fully committed to the Stock Honda program and they see many years of working closely with Honda and HPD.
