After enjoying a thrilling day of WinterNationals competition on Saturday to launch the 2021 Superkarts! USA Pro Tour at NOLA Motorsports in Avondale, Louisiana, the drivers and teams returned to the track on Sunday to do it all over again. A midday shower added a wrinkle in the storyline, and the finals were packed with action. Six drivers completed weekend main event sweeps on Sunday, as Jeremy Fletcher (X30 Senior), Cole Morgan (KA100 Senior), Noah Baker (KA100 Junior), Enzo Vidmontiene (Mini Swift), Gianmatteo Rousseau (Mini Swift) joined defending SKUSA Pro Tour Pro Shifter champ AJ Myers in starting the season with two victories. That said, on more than one occasion, the winners did not cross the line first as pushback bumpers penalties played a role in final classifications.
The Rolison Performance Group sponsored X30 Senior class was the first affected by the light rain that hit the facility at the very end of the Prefinals. Rain began to fall on the opening lap of the 10-lap race and sent the top-three off the track. After a lap of wet running, SKUSA brought out a full course yellow and eventually the red flag to end the session. The decision was made to go to lunch break and come back with a complete restart. The rain shower lasted less than 20 minutes, but the restart of the Prefinal was still run on a very wet track. Connor Zilisch (Nitro Kart / Redspeed) showed his mastery of the tough conditions to take the win and the pole for the main event.

The California ProKart Challenge returns to the CalSpeed Karting facility on June 18-20 for a double-header weekend to continue the 2021 season (Photo: DromoPhotos.com)
The 2021 California ProKart Challenge program returns trackside next weekend at the CalSpeed Karting facility. The Fontana, California circuit was left off the 2020 schedule due to COVID-19 restrictions, and comes back this season with the only double-header weekend for the year. Superkarts! USA regional competitors will be on-track for three days, including a full day of practice on Friday, June 18 and two separate rounds of racing on Saturday, June 19 and Sunday, June 20.
The season began back in April with the opening round held at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park, as 13 classes were offered in the title chase for a 2021 championship. This year’s series format will again be a ‘Best 5 of 6 races’, with competitors having the ability to drop one round towards their year-end points total. This means drivers who were not able to race at the series opener can still compete for a spot on the year-end championship podium, or if facing other challenges can still be in the title hunt even if they cannot race both days at CalSpeed.

Rolison Performance Group's Ryan Norberg scored an impressive come-from-behind win at the third round of the SKUSA Winter Series in Homestead (Photo: OnTrack Promotions)
The expected excitement of the third round of the SKUSA Winter Series did not disappoint, as the racing was epic in a majority of the categories. Run in the reverse direction as the opening rounds in January, the 12-turn AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires presented a new challenge as multiple passing opportunities quickly emerged. Three-time SKUSA Pro Tour X30 champion Ryan Norberg cemented his reputation even further by recovering from contact-filled opening laps that shuffled him from pole to sixth, working back to the lead to score a stunning triumph. In Pro Shifter, MRC’s Billy Musgrave broke through for his first win after point lead AJ Myers (Croc Promotion USA) suffered a rear sprocket failure while leading in the main. The third storyline centered on the masterful performance by Canadian Mackenzie Clark (Prime Powerteam / BirelART), who positioned himself in the lead trio in X30 Junior and then managed the race with precision, moving to the lead in the late-going to score his maiden national level victory. The Touch and Go (TaG) engine platform took the USA karting scene by storm in the early 2000s, but it was not until 2008 that Superkarts! USA introduced the Junior category to the SuperNationals. Since then, 13 different drivers have claimed victory on SuperSunday – including two current Formula 1 drivers (George Russell in 2011 and Lance Stroll in 2012). Logan Sargeant won the class in 2014 before becoming the only USA driver to win the FIA World Championship in Junior competitionin 2015. Now, he’s set to be on the grid in F1 for 2023. Others make this list a very well-established group of former winners, including last year’s victor Jeremy Fletcher, who became only the second driver in SuperNationals history to win twice in the same event – taking the top honors in both KA100 and X30 Junior. Superkarts! USA returned the site of the 2020 WinterNationals this weekend at NOLA Motorsports in New Orleans, where COVID-19 put an end to the plans for the year’s Pro Tour.
