The 17th season of the California ProKart Challenge hosted the opening event of the season at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Round One of the five-event, six-round championship took place on April 24-25 at the Buttonwillow, California facility. Ideal racing weather welcomed more than 120 entries in 11 categories, as racers began their bid for a victory and endeavor toward the 2021 championship. The two-day event saw the racers take the track on Saturday for practice and qualifying, with the Prefinal and Final events held on Sunday.
The largest category of the weekend was the Nash Motorsportz KA100 Senior with 33 drivers. Qualifying saw seven drivers clock in a time within one tenth of the fastest lap, set by Dante Yu. He led the opening five laps of the Prefinal until he was eventually shuffled back to the sixth position. Colorado driver Macy Williams took over the lead and led the remainder of the 12-lap race for the win and pole position in the main event. After leading the first circuit, however, Williams lost the advantage on lap four. Blake Nash then established himself into the lead until just before the halfway point, when he was relegated back to third by Yu and Oliver Calvo. Yu led first and then Calvo, before Nash returned to the point on the penultimate lap. The three battled hard on the final circuit, with Nash able to make an exciting move from third to first in the final two corners, reaching the checkered flag for his first victory in the category. Calvo ended up second, with Yu rounding out the podium. Senior rookie Kyriakos Sioukas and Luis Perez finished fourth and fifth.

The 25th edition of the SKUSA SuperNationals will be the fourth year at which the KA100 Junior category has been offered. The 100cc craze is still booming after the class was introduced on the SKUSA Pro Tour and SuperNationals in 2018. Originally, the class was scheduled to be capped at 44 drivers this year, but numbers and interest continued to grow. For the first time in its four-year history, the class will offer an expanded roster, welcoming a whopping 65 drivers who will battle to become the fourth different winner. The 2021 version of the Superkarts! USA Pro Tour will begin this weekend at the NOLA Motorsports facility. The fourth edition of the WinterNationals is set to take place on the March 26-28 weekend at the Avondale, Louisiana facility, roughly one year after the 2020 version was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This season marks the 12th year for the SKUSA Pro Tour, as it continues to be among the longest running national series programs in North America. Following the Summer Festival in August 2020 to make up the six rounds of racing, SKUSA is looking forward to a more standard three event, six rounds of competition in 2021.
The SKUSA WinterNationals was established in 2017, as the SKUSA Pro Tour expanded to a three event, six-round format. The opening two years were held at NOLA Motorsports before moving to CalSpeed Karting in 2019. The fourth edition returns to New Orleans, and the 1.1-mile, 17-turn circuit in the counter-clockwise direction. For the second straight year, Superkarts! USA has launched its coast-to-coast national season with their Winter Series in Florida. The organization launched the new ‘pre-season training’ program in 2018 and drew incredibly strong numbers, and the momentum continued in January with over 230 entries battling it out over the two days of competition. The drivers and teams have returned to AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex Presented by MG Tires for the third and fourth rounds of the series, which will crown the champions. The primary candidates made themselves known during the opening weekend, but with the track being run in the reverse direction this time around, all bets are off.
The question in the new Pro Shifter category is apparent: can anyone stop 2018 SKUSA Pro Tour champion AJ Myers? The Mad Old Nut Racing / Croc Promotions USA pilot swept the opening weekend in Homestead, earning a perfect score for the first two rounds over two-time SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave (MRC / Aluminos). The duo ran 1-2 throughout the weekend, with Mathias Ramirez (PSL / Birel ART) sitting third. Ramirez will be back to challenge Myers and Musgrave, as will with Andrew Bujdoso (Mad Old Nut / Croc), Kyle Wick (CRG) and Max Hewitt (CRG). The field is gaining international flavor with five different countries represented, including Brazilian Pedro Piquet (CRG), the son of Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet. Cadet racing at the SKUSA SuperNationals was first introduced at the second edition of the event back in 1998 with the 60cc Novice shifter class. That category ran up to 2005 before the organization changed hands. It took the creation of the SKUSA Pro Tour in 2010 for Cadet racing to be back on the SuperNationals weekend schedule. Since then, a new winner in the TaG Cadet / Mini Swift categories has been crowned every year over this 11-race span. A 12th different winner will be crowned this SuperSunday and this driver will add his or her name to a distinct list that includes Formula 1, INDYCAR, and karting superstars.
