California ProKart Challenge Begins 19th Season Next Weekend
Friday, 03 March 2023 09:29

2023 season for the California ProKart Challenge begins on the March 11-12 weekend in Buttonwillow

The 2023 California ProKart Challenge will begin on the March 11-12 weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. The 19th season of the Superkarts! USA regional program visits the California facility for the first round of the six-round championship series. The race will be the first major event within the state on the season, with big numbers anticipated for the two-day event.

Buttonwillow has been a popular and consistent destination for the series, with its centralized location between northern and southern California. The opening round is slated for the national circuit in the counter-clockwise direction, including the popular ‘Spa’ and ‘Le Mans’ section that produce exciting finishes.

The 2023 California ProKart Challenge schedule has been revised from what was originally slated heading into the calendar year, due mostly to weather delaying the completion of the new K1 Circuit in Winchester, California.

“Weather has not been friendly to us here in the southern California region over the last few months, including this past week,” stated Superkarts! USA CEO Tom Kutscher. “The new K1 Circuit has had delays in completing their final phase of construction before opening their doors, which we anticipate will be later this Spring. The facility will be a key partner to SKUSA and the California ProKart Challenge now and in the future, and we look forward to hosting our first ever event there in August.”

The California ProKart Challenge completed the 2022 season over the October 1-2 weekend, signifying the end of two things. First, the sixth and final round of the Superkarts! USA regional program was contested at the CalSpeed Karting facility. Secondly, the Fontana, California facility hosted its final regional event prior to its closing later this year. CalSpeed has been the site to many Superkarts! USA events during its history, and the final chapter of that story helped to decide this year’s series champions. The backdrop was perfect with weather sunny and warm for the nearly 100 drivers competing over the two-day event on the ‘Classico’ layout.

History will be made this weekend during the 2022 California ProKart Challenge event at CalSpeed Karting. The event slated for October 1-2 is set to be the last major karting event at the Fontana, California circuit that resides outside the Auto Club Speedway. CalSpeed announced the closure of the facility coming this December, and thus, the California PKC event will be the final Superkarts! USA event in its long history.

On the other side of history will be the championships decided with the sixth and final round of the 2022 California ProKart Challenge. The ‘best five of six’ championship format will take the title chases to the very end, with drivers searching for additional points in the quest for the crown while others fight to remain at the top when the final checkered flag is waved following the main events on Sunday afternoon.

The tightest battle going into the finale weekend is in the KA100 Junior class presented by Nash Motorsportz. Only two points separate Keagan Kaminski and Charlie Smith with the one round remaining. Smith has one victory while Kaminski has gone winless through the first five rounds, earning four top-five results. Round One winner William Rasmussen is close behind in third with Alex Mercado fourth. Round Four winner Kane Martin still has a mathematical chance as well, sitting fifth. Ethan Lampe is the point leader heading into the final round in the HRT Driver Development KA100 Senior class. Lampe has three podium finishes on the season and leads by 60 points over two-time winner Blake Nash – who already has a drop by missing the opening round. Aiden Kempf is third with two-time winner Frankie Mossman in fourth, another driver with a drop already after missing Round Two. All that sets up for what should be an interesting run to the championship.

It has been over two months since the California ProKart Challenge program was trackside. After the lengthy time off, the Superkarts! USA regional series is set for a return to the Santa Maria Karting Association facility for the penultimate round of the championship program. The Santa Maria, California facility on the ‘K’ track configuration is the site of Round Five on September 10-11 in the six-round championship series schedule. Following the double round weekend at CalSpeed, the format for Santa Maria features the two-day schedule with practice and qualifying on Saturday, followed by Prefinal and Final action on Sunday.

Among those leading the way in the point standings heading into the Santa Maria weekend is multi-time series champion and four-time SKUSA SuperNationals winner Billy Musgrave who is the top driver in the Factory Karts Pro Shifter chase. Musgrave has three wins in four rounds, holding a strong advantage over Ansel Baldovin and Luca Bortone. The largest category of the season has been the HRT Driver Development KA100 Senior class, welcoming 38 different drivers over the first four rounds. Ethan Lampe has yet to win. However, he leads the championship standings by 18 points over two-time winner Blake Nash, with fellow two-time winner Frankie Mossman sitting back in third.
