The racing season is underway for the California ProKart Challenge with a quick turnaround to host the second event of the 2022 season. On the May 14-15 weekend, the Superkarts! USA regional series returns to the Buttonwillow Raceway Park, site of the opening round last month. The Buttonwillow, California facility will welcome back the racers, this time taking to the 7/10-mile circuit in the clockwise direction. Portions of the $70,000 prize package for the season were handed out last month at the opener, with more to be presented at the popular podium ceremony following the Round Two action as drivers push forward in their championship chases.
Frankie Mossman came away with the Round One victory in the HRT Driver Development KA100 Senior division, but it is Ethan Lampe that leads the championship after one race. Lampe was top qualifier and won the Prefinal, only to finish second to Mossman. Add in the fast lap bonus and Lampe holds a 20-point advantage going into Round Two over Mossman. Third-place finisher Jackson Menchu is third, 60 points out of first. It was a near perfect score for William Rasmussen in the Nash Motorsportz KA100 Junior class. Sweeping the action, he only missed out on the fast lap bonus to leave Round One with a 40-point gap over fast time driver and runner-up Alex Mercado – with third-place finisher Keagan Kaminski sitting third, back by only 10 points more. It was a perfect score for Brian Phillipsen in Round One of the Mike Manning Karting KA100 Master class. Phillipsen holds a 50-point lead over Tim Meyer, with Ronnie Swaim in third going into the second event.

The 2022 California ProKart Challenge is set to begin on the April 23-24 weekend at the Buttonwillow Raceway Park. The 18th season of the program kicks off at the Buttonwillow, California facility, welcoming the Superkarts! USA regional competitors for the opening round of the six-round championship.
The Buttonwillow Raceway Park has been a consistent destination for the California ProKart Challenge, largely due to its central location between NorCal and SoCal. The opening round this year is slated for the national circuit in the counter-clockwise direction, including the popular ‘Spa’ and ‘Le Mans’ section that produce exciting finishes.
This year’s series format will again be a ‘Best 5 of 6 races’, with competitors having the ability to drop one round towards their year-end points total. Following the upcoming season opener, the California ProKart Challenge returns to Buttonwillow on May 14-15 for Round Two in the ‘clockwise’ direction. June welcomes the lone ‘double-header’ weekend, with two rounds contested over the June 24-26 weekend at the CalSpeed Karting facility. The series will take off July and August before visiting the historic Santa Maria Karting Association facility on September 10-11 for Round Five. The final round is a return to CalSpeed on October 1-2. The single-round weekends will feature a full day of practice plus qualifying on Saturday, with Prefinal and Final action contested on Sunday.

The Superkarts! USA Pro Tour kicked off its 13th season today at the NOLA Motorsports Park facility in Avondale, LA with the fifth running of their WinterNationals. NOLA’s 1.1-mile, 17-turn circuit features a multitude of overtaking opportunities which resulted in another thrilling day of close-quarters competition. A total of nine classes of IAME and KZ categories were on the docket, and from the very start of the day, weather played a key role in the overall storyline. As forecast, rain arrived on the scene early in the morning, eventually delaying the start of the official sessions, but it also sent the field onto rain tires for both qualifying and then shortened Prefinals. Only X30 Senior ran their Prefinal on slicks as the last class in the rotation. In the headline classes, GWR / Team Felon’s Jeremy Fletcher (Tony Kart) emerged from a thrilling multi-kart battle in X30 Senior to score his first top-tier Pro Tour victory, while PSL Karting’s Marijn Kremers (Birel ART) dominated the Pro Shifter category from start-to-finish. It was the first SKUSA win for each driver; the first Senior victory for Fletcher and the first win for Kremers in a shifter on American soil. In the Junior races, Caleb Gafrarar (X30 Junior) and Helio Meza (KA100 Junior) scored the wins. Read full story on eKartingNews.com |
