Ryan Norberg continues streak from SuperNats24 with victory in X30 Senior debut in 2022 (Photo: EKN)

The penultimate round of the 2022 Superkarts! USA Winter Series was held at the AMR Homestead-Miami Motorplex presented by MG Tires on Saturday with perfect weather conditions all day long at the Homestead, Florida facility. The eight race groups with nine classes contested the third round of the championship program to open up the season. A number of drivers secured their first wins of the season while others added the to the short total of the year.

The Group A Apparel X30 Senior category went beyond the scheduled distance and was decided after the final checkered flag. Defending series champion Ryan Norberg (RPG / Kosmic) made his 2022 debut this weekend after sitting out the month of January. He was instantly into the mix after qualifying fourth as Senior rookie Carson Morgan (RPM / Tony Kart) set the pace with a 47.887-lap time. He fell back to third as championship leader Matheus Morgatto (AM / Exprit) and Norberg slipped through in the Prefinal. The main event was an early battle until Norberg secured the top position. While Morgatto was able to record fast lap of the race, he put the pressure on Norberg but was unable to make a move. Norberg crossed the line as the winner, however, was penalized for a jump start. A protest was filed, and it went in Norberg’s favor, restoring him as the winner and putting Morgatto back to second. Diego Ramos (REM / Kosmic) finished third with Marjin Kremers (PSL / Birel ART) classified fourth with defending SKUSA Pro Tour champion Hannah Greenemeier (RPG / Kosmic) dropped to fifth after a pushback bumper penalty. Superkarts! USA Forced to Change 2023 Pro Tour Event Venues

Orlando Kart Center will host the 2023 SKUSA Pro Tour WinterNationals

After being announced in August of 2022, the schedule for this year’s Superkarts! USA Pro Tour has been altered significantly over the last two weeks due to circumstances outside of the organization’s control.

As confirmed during the SKUSA Winter Series opener in Homestead, FL, this year’s Pro Tour WinterNationals will be moving from NOLA Motorsports Park to the Orlando Kart Center after recent contract negotiations with the facility went in a negative direction. Despite this unforeseen disappointment, SKUSA is thrilled to have the opportunity to make its debut at OKC, and the event dates will remain the same on the March 31 – April 2 weekend. Immediate feedback from the teams that support the Pro Tour was unanimously positive, as the venue change will decrease their travel costs. Input from many drivers and their parents was also positive.

“To be honest, I’m still pretty floored with how everything went down with NOLA Motorsports Park over the last six weeks, but we were put in a position where we truly had no choice but to look for an alternate facility,” offered SKUSA CEO Tom Kutscher. “An unreasonable increase in what they expected us to pay for the track rental forced us to seek another option, and I want to thank Andre Martins from the Orlando Kart Center for welcoming us to his facility for the WinterNationals.”

Unfortunately, the WinterNationals location is not the only change in the 2023 national racing schedule. SKUSA was extremely excited about debuting at the new K1 Circuit in Winchester, CA, but while the track construction continues, it has become apparent that the facility will not be prepared to host an event of the magnitude of the SpringNationals by the June 9-11 event date. In its place, SKUSA has completed an agreement to head back to the Utah Motorsports Campus for this year’s midway point in the Pro Tour. SKUSA has a long history of major events at UMC, and the racing has always been competitive.

“Like everyone in California, we’re anxious to take to the track at our region’s newest facility, which will no doubt be an immediate crown jewel for karting on the west coast,” Kutscher continued. “But while the track is working diligently on its construction, we simply cannot commit to it being ready for the SpringNationals. We’re thrilled to be working closely with the track’s new General Manager – Mike Smith – and we look forward to holding a few California ProKart Challenge races there this year, and very likely the SpringNationals in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates to the California PKC schedule in the very near future, as well.”

The Pro Tour season finale, the SummerNationals, remains confirmed at New Castle Motorsports Park on the July 28-30 weekend to cap the championship series.

EKN Exclusive: Superkarts! USA SuperNationals 26 – Preview Series – X30 Junior

14 races…14 different winners. TaG competition for the Junior level began back in 2008 and has been among the most dramatic categories each year. The list of former winners over the last 14 SuperNationals includes names that have continued up the motorsports ranks – including three current Formula One drivers – George Russell (2011), Lance Stroll (2012) and Logan Sargeant (2014).

The defending race winner Ernesto Rivera has been on fire since his triumph last year, going on to win multiple races along with the SKUSA Pro Tour title and other championships on the season. The driver from Mexico has elected to move up to the Senior ranks, and thus opening the door for a 15th different winner to join the prestigious list.

In fact, only one of the top-10 drivers from last year’s main event are returning for SuperNationals 26. 2021 SuperNationals Mini Swift winner Enzo Vidmontiene (MottazSport / Kart Republic) put in a great rookie performance a year ago to finish ninth. While he did not contest the category on the SKUSA Pro Tour, he finished third in the USPKS final standings for 2023. Read full story on eKartingNews.com
